448.0. ""my son the Priest ...a special day !!"" by CSLALL::MWEBSTER () Thu Mar 10 1994 14:18

    Hello !

    I would like some feed-back and/or suggestions on how I could
    "celebrate" or mark the fact that my son will be ordained to the
    office of Priest this coming sunday. He just turned 16 and this
    is my first experience (he's my only son) and as a single parent I'm
    not sure what to do but I would like to make this day a special one
    in some way. When my own little brothers were ordained we lived
    states away and I didn't get to participate, so I'm not sure what
    to do ... if anything !!!

    Any suggestions from your brethren based on your own experience ???

    Thanks in advance for sharing !
    If you would prefer to send the information directly to me rather
    than the conference, please feel free to do so : CSLALL::MWEBSTER

448.1Becoming a Priest is a great blessing...BSS::RONEYCharles RoneyThu Mar 10 1994 15:0332

	Mathilde,

		Well, that is a special day! Congratulations to both you and
	your son. It seems that you have been doing a good job as parent to
	have him worthy to become a priest.

		I don't know of anything that is particularly done for this
	kind of thing (other than maybe going out to dinner or something like
	that), but I do believe that a young man becoming a priest is a special
	thing.

		First, he should understand that he now can have, and is
	entitled to, the ministering of angles; bless the sacrament; baptize;
	and ordain other priests, teachers, and deacons (see D&C 20:46-52).

		I have always considered it a special calling because of the
	example of Philip in Acts 8. Verses 5 - 13 detail what he did, and
	some conditions are usually attributed to only those who hold the
	Melchizedek priesthood. Verses 14-17 indicate that Philip was not
	able to bestow the Holy Ghost, and therefore lacked the Melchizedek
	priesthood, but he was able to, through his great faith, perform many
	miracles. Philip's mission continues in verses 26-40 to the end of
	the chapter, and we hear nothing more about him except a reference of
	his continued calling in Acts 21:8.

		If you could do anything, it would be, IMHO, that you impress
	upon your son the importance of his new calling, and the additional
	responsibilities and blessing available to him.

	Charles

    In our ward, the (priesthood holding) father and his new Priest
    son are called to bless the Sacrament together.

    ...that's a nice thing to do ... but what you do for a boy who doesn't
    really have a father to speak of (anyway he lives very far away and
    is not worthy) ... since as a mother I can't really participate and
    I'm a single parent with no other male in our household ???

    His ordination was very nice, we were all there (the people who really
    counted), his other Priest friends and the leaders who ordained him,
    the blessing given him by Our Bishop was very impressive and I could
    feel the Spirit with us ... it was very special indeed !!!

    I guess I didn't need to worry about making it a special day ... the
    Lord has "His" way of doing that ...!!!

    Thanks for the suggestions !!!
