405.0. "Accepting Jesus Christ as Savior" by ASDG::J_MCGEE () Fri Jun 05 1992 14:33

Hi, My name is Joe McGee, and I am a Test Technician in Hudson.

I grew up in the Mormon church, but left it at age 15, (about 22 years
ago). My question is, do the Mormons teach that one needs to repent of
their sins, and accept Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior?
Such as the Assembly of God,(of which I am a member of), believe in.
Seems to me, that although we did learn of Jesus in Sunday school, we
were not taught that he died for our sins on calvery hill, and was
raised up to life on the 3rd day. I appreciate any and all help.

    Thanks in advance.

    Joe

P.S. How active is the Mormon church in the Mass/New England area?

    Hi Joe,

The Church most definitly does teach the neccessity of faith in Jesus
Christ, repentance, baptism, etc. Allen Leigh has done a very good job of
outlining the beliefs and teachings of the Church in note 4.*. Your
particular question is discussed in reply 4.29. Please take a minute
to review that and then if you have additional questions feel free to
    post them.

Hi Joe,

I thought I'd point out some of the notes that discuss our belief in Christ.

4.23 through 4.33 Various Aspects of Salvation
         11 Favorite Bible Teachings
12 Favorite Book of Mormon Teachings
         97 The Godhead
        119 Salvation
        216 Was Jesus Divine?
        400 Come unto Christ

As you read those notes, please feel free to share your feelings, and to ask
questions. If your questions are about our beliefs in Jesus Christ, this note
would be a good place for them. If they are about other topics of Mormonism,
it would be helpful if you post them to the appropriate notes.

You can do a SHOW KEY to see the key words that are defined for this
conference, and you can do a DIR/KEY=x to get a list of notes that are flagged
with particular keywords, where x is a keyword.

yea, and when you get done reading that be sure to come back and we'll
have the missionaries bring you over a few dozen books to read.

:) - which means (in case you're new to notes) i'm just being my
    typical sarcastic self here.

to answer your question about the activity of the Church here in NE, it
is very active in spite of the move-ins from Utah et al. I'd say the
numbers double every 7-10 years. Just splitting those wards right and
left. Before you know it they'll even be one in Peterbourough NH. :)

Hi Joe! Welcome to the conference. I joined the church when I was
	27. I have noticed that LDS teachings tend to use Christ as a
foundation (that everyone is supposed to understand), and then go
from there. As I have taught the 15-year olds in Sunday School,
you left too soon because there are very important principles in
that class. The principle behind the atonement is repentance, and
this would not be possible without Jesus Christ. The biggest problem
I have seen in the secular churches is that they believe that all a
person has to do is accept Christ, and then everything else will work
out OK. This is not born out bu the scriptures, but is a worldly
doctrine. Mormons *have* to believe in Christ and his mission, and
they have to, at some point in their life, be *converted* to Christ's
purpose and mission as Lord, Saviour, and Redeemer. The only main
advantage a person not born in the church has is that they are usually
converted _before_ they join. All members born into the church must
also convert to be able to reap the benifits. My biggest problem has
been getting my children to obtain their own testimony of the gospel
and not rely on mine. Good luck to you and yours.

	Charles

Hi, Joe. Maybe someone in the Hudson (MA?) area can post the local
Missionaries' phone number. They'd be happy to answer your questions.
The Missionaries assigned to my ward, Nashua (NH) 1, would welcome the
opportunity to talk with you. They're at (603) 672 2206.

Repent of sins? You bet. I'm grateful for the opportunity to
repent and for the miracle of forgiveness (you might want to read the
book of that title, by Spencer W. Kimball). Accept Jesus Christ as
Lord and Savior? Yes, indeed. Again, I'm thankful for his atoning
sacrifice, crucifixion, and especially for his resurrection.

Perhaps your congregation sings, as we do, that beautiful hymn: I Know
that My Redeemer Lives. The words are a testimony, speaking of many
aspects and attributes of our Savior.

    Welcome,
    aq

I think the number for the missionaries for Hudson, MA is
    (508) 481-1689.
