| Wow! What an interesting idea for a note!
Here are a few:
Brigham Young didn't say "This is the place". What did he say?
What was the name of Ab Jenkin's race car and where was (is?) it
on display? How fast did it go?
Where is "gravity hill"?
Where was the "iron mission"?
Those familiar with LDS Church history know Col. Thomas Kane was a true
friend of the Mormons. How many locations are named after him? (I know
of two & there might be more...)
How far did the Mormon Battalion march? What did Brigham Young tell them
about playing cards?
Why are our Stakes called Stakes?
|
361.2 | I've got two of them | BALMER::MUDGETT | He's reading notes again, Mom! | Thu Jul 26 1990 23:08 | 9 |
| oh! oh! (that was taken from "CAR 54 WHERE ARE YOU?") I've got two
of these!
Didn't Brigham Young say, "This is the place, drive on."
Stakes come from the tent stakes used to hold a tent up in some
part of the Old Testament.

I'm going from memory, but I think Brigham Young said "This is the right
place" and I don't remember about the "drive on" part. Anyone have a history
book available?
Good show, Fred, about the tent. Anyone remember the Isaiah scripture that
speaks of the "tent of Zion" which our Stakes hold up?
Which General Authority was known as the laziest boy on the block? Why?
Which General Authority drove his traveling companions "up a wall" by
singing while they were driving to Stake Conferences?
Which Church President was the first to record his voice on a phonograph?
What General Authority was told as a young boy that he would become
greater in the Church than his father who was a member of the First
Presidency?
Which Utah Temple has a circular spiral stairway that has no center support?
True or False: the first Mormon pioneers entered the Utah valley on
July 24, 1847.
What did Jim Bridger say about growing corn in the Utah area?
Who was the first person baptized in the Dispensation of Fulness of Times?
True or false: the LDS Church sent a representative to Washington to see
if the Federal government could help them, and the result of their
negotiations was the Mormon Battalion.
True or false: gold was first discovered at Sutter's mill in California by
Mormons.

From what little I do know:

He said "This is the right place."
>Which Church President was the first to record his voice on a phonograph?
Lorenzo Snow? I remember hearing his voice on a video, which came from an
early, crude recording. But I don't know if it was the first.
>Which Utah Temple has a circular spiral stairway that has no center support?
Easy. Manti. I've been there. It's awesome.
>Who was the first person baptized in the Dispensation of Fulness of Times?
Oliver Cowdery. (Joseph Smith - History 1:73)

| Hi Kevin,
I could be wrong, but I think the voice you recall is that of Wilford
Woodruff.
I haven't been through the Manti temple, but I've seen photos of the
staircase. Quite a job of pioneer skills....

In what year was the transcontinental railroad connected together, and
at what place in Utah?
How high is the shaft at the Joseph Smith Memorial? Why?
How many dedicated temples does the Church currently have? Can you name
them all? (I can't)

| Didn't Jim Bridger say he'd pay $1,000.00 (a noble price then - shoot,
even now it's not bad) for the first bushel of corn grown there? I
believe he was being sarcastic... ;)

martyred.

| >What was the name of Ab Jenkin's race car and where was (is?) it

The Mormon Meteor. It's bright red and old fashioned with a rudder in back.
When I was I kid I used to like to roam the basement of the Utah Capitol
building and see the exhibits from all the Counties. The race car was one
of my favorites. I don't know if it is still there, but it was four or five
years ago. Ab set world records in the car, but I don't recall how fast he
went.
>Where is "gravity hill"?
Behind the Utah Capitol building. You think you are climbing up a hill
and then discover you're at the bottom of a small canyon.
>Where was the "iron mission"?
West of Cedar City, Utah (my home). Brigham Young sent pioneers there to
produce iron.
>Those familiar with LDS Church history know Col. Thomas Kane was a true
>friend of the Mormons. How many locations are named after him? (I know
>of two & there might be more...)
Kane County, Utah and Kanesville, Pa. The Saints at the Kanesville Branch
(this was in 1963) had a yearly celebration in remembrance of Col. Kane.
I don't know if they still do that.
>How far did the Mormon Battalion march? What did Brigham Young tell them
>about playing cards?
He said that if they would not play cards, they wouldn't have to fire a
shot, or was it that they wouldn't be killed... Not sure. Something like
that. Any historians out there who remember the distance? In its time,
it was the longest Infantry march in US history.

| >True or false: the LDS Church sent a representative to Washington to see
>if the Federal government could help them, and the result of their
>negotiations was the Mormon Battalion.
True. One of the myths of LDS history is that the Government came to the
Church with the request that they help with the war in Mexico, and that the
Saints being loyal to their country complied by sending the Mormon Battalion.
In reality, the Church sent the President of the Eastern States Mission to
Washington to see if there was some way that the Government could help get
the Saints to the West. Sending the Mormon Battalion was a great sacrifice
by the families, but it was a great help too. It got 500 men to the west
at no expense to the Church, and the men sent their Army pay to their families,
thus helping them pay for their trek.
>True or false: gold was first discovered at Sutter's mill in California by
>Mormons.
True. Two men (If I recall correctly; not sure of this number) from the
Mormon Battalion.

I don't have a guess but I'm considered to be one of the laziest men
in our Ward.

I've heard that it was John Taylor.
>What General Authority was told as a young boy that he would become

A shot in the dark here but I'd say Joseph F. Smith. His father was
Hyrum Smith.

If its worth anything this is all sheer genius. I've been teaching

answer these questions. :-)

>>Which General Authority drove his traveling companions "up a wall" by

>
>I've heard that it was John Taylor.
Good guess, Fred, because John Taylor had a beautiful voice, but sorry. It
was Heber J. Grant who didn't have a beautiful voice. He had a personal goal
to be able to sing, and he sang and sang while he drove to Stake
Conferences. He did reach his goal, and I expect the other GA were glad!
>>What General Authority was told as a young boy that he would become

>A shot in the dark here but I'd say Joseph F. Smith. His father was

Another good but wrong guess. Heber J. Grant, again. His father was a
counselor to Brigham Young. One of the General Authorities prophesied when
Heber was a young child that he would become greater in the Church (in terms
of organization not necessarily righteousness) than his father, and he became
Church President.
The laziest boy in the ward was also Heber J. Grant. He had a personal goal
to become a baseball player and spent many hours throwing a ball against the
side of his Bishop's barn. People said he was the laziest boy in the ward
because all he did was throw that ball all day. Heber became a member of a
team that won state and a regional championships. He was famous for his
discipline in reaching his goals!
