Hi,
As I will probably be moving soon, (ISDN = I've Switched Desks Now),
and we were very low on disk space, I decided to make a backup of my
files including the On-line Scriptures that were mentioned in .0.
I figure they will have a new home in about a couple of weeks (if
everything goes well). I will post a note here and let you know
where the new home for the scriptures is as soon as I have everything
set up.
This was the reason that I posted so many chapters all at once for the
Book of Mormon Study Group.
Take care,
Frank

356.2 | I'm back | SUOSW4::WILLOUGHBY | FRANKly speaking | Wed Nov 28 1990 12:25 | 59 |
| I'm back,
My transfer came through. I've been transferred to Stuttgart (4 weeks
ago), and now have a job that I really like and I have a much better than
average manager. 8^)
I don't have an apartment yet as the apartment situation here is critical.
There is very little available, and what is available is unaffordable.
I read the conference on a weekly basis (usually sent to me via batch),
but I'll try to read it daily if/when I find the time.
I am in the process of settting up the directories for the ON-LINE
versions of the Bible & Book of Mormon on my system. I currently have
the KJV Bible and the Book of Mormon (most of it anyway) in normal ascii
text format (which you can type or read). I should have the bookreader
format in about a week or so (for those of you who have been blessed with
the good fortune of having a workstation).
The tree structure looks like this:
SUOSWS::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.BIBLE] ! ASCII KJV
SUOSWS::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.BIBLE.DECW] ! BOOKREADER KJV
SUOSWS::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.BOM] ! ASCII BOOK OF MORMON
* If you have problems accessing the files after next Friday, *
* send me a quick mail and I'll take care of it quickly. *
I would like to apologize to those who were left hanging with the Book
of Mormon Study Group. I would have like to have done more with it,
but I just didn't have the time (with job-hunting & apartment-hunting
going on).
I have got a couple of projects on the back burner. I will do my best
to have them done by January/February (if all goes well). They are:
A quick look (as if there was such a thing) at the Nag Hammadi texts and
Dead Sea Scrolls and how they support the LDS claim that we *are* the
restored Church of Jesus Christ. One problem I am having is the huge
chunk of time (a commodity that is extremely scarce right now) that it
involves to do this right.
Finish typing in the Book of Mormon. If I suddenly get a lot of free
time, I could translate it into bookreader format.
Comparing the JST translation of the Bible with the Einheitsuebersetzung
(German Catholic/Protestant version of the Bible). BTW, Joseph Smith said
that the Martin Luther translation is the most correct of the then available
versions of the Bible. (From what I have seen so far, there are places
where the KJV translation isn't as good as the Einheitsuebersetzung).
There are passages that are _definitely_ misleading. I don't have the
Martin Luther Bible, or I could compare the three of them.
Well, I've got to go.
Take care,
Frank

356.3 | LOCATION OF KJV IN BOOKREADER FORMAT | SUOSW4::WILLOUGHBY | FRANKly speaking | Wed Nov 28 1990 13:39 | 41 |
|
Here is the location for a copy of the KJV Bible in Boookreader Format:
CVG""::SYS$COMMON:[DECW_BOOK.NON-WORK_RELATED]*.DECW* (New Hampshire)
OR
SUOSWS::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.BIBLE.DECW]*.DECW* (Germany)
The files have a total of @ 84,000 blocks (42 MB), so check first to see
if you will have enough disk space before copying it. You can find out
how much disk space you have available by typing:
$SHOW QUOTA (How much disk space (blocks) you have available in your account)
If you don't have any quotas, you are lucky, all you have to do is check to
see how much free disk space is left.
$SHOW DEV D (How much free disk space on your disk)
If you have more than 84,000 free blocks left, then copy the files via spool
(unless you want to sit at your termina for the next week or so).
To use spool (ftsv),
1) Set default to the directory where you want to copy the files to.
2) Give the following command:
$SPOOL COPY/READ/WRITE/LOG
_From: CVG""::SYS$COMMON:[DECW_BOOK.NON-WORK_RELATED]*.DECW*
_To: *
Once you have copied them, please let others in your area know that you have it.
It will reduce the load on the systems and the network.
Best Regards,
Frank

356.4 | Looking for a new home | SUOSW4::WILLOUGHBY | FRANKly speaking | Thu Jan 03 1991 03:48 | 22 |
|
There is a strong possibility that the Bible & Book of Mormon Files
(text & Bookreader formats) that I are currently in my directory will
have to be deleted as they consume too much disk space. I will ensure
that the files will be there until at least Friday the 18th of January.
If you wish to copy the files, please do so as soon as possible.
(It wouldn't hurt if someone else had a copy - hint, hint).
I will make a backup of the files onto tape for archival purposes and
try to resurrect the files as soon as disk space allows (which probably
won't be in the near future).
If anyone has the disk space, please copy them and make them publicly
available. Please post a reply to this note saying where the new
location is.
Thanks for your help.
Best Regards,
Frank

356.5 | Good News | SUOSW4::WILLOUGHBY | FRANKly speaking | Wed Jun 12 1991 06:28 | 20 |
|
I've got some really good news.
I freed up enough disk space and the scriptures will continue to
be on-line.
Also, I expect to have ALL of the standard works on-line soon.
===
I already have the KJV Bible & part of the Book of Mormon.
The rest of the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine & Covenants &
the Pearl of Great Price should be available in the near future.
Stay tuned. I'll post a note here when ALL of the standard works
are on-line & available.
Best Regards,
Frank

8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^) 8^)
AT LONG LAST, Project Iron-Rod is complete and I NOW HAVE ALL OF THE
STANDARD WORKS - ONLINE!
I have the standard works in TWO formats - ULTRIX & VMS. Please use
the correct version for your Operating System. If in doubt, try the
VMS files. The difference is in the format of the files. ULTRIX uses
<LF> to start a new line & VMS (along with most other systems) uses <CR><LF>.
I also have some other documents in bookreader format. (The Constitution,
The Bill of Rights, etc). I also have a copy of the KJV (King James Version
of the Bible) in bookreader format and I will put it in the bookreader
directory as soon as I free up enough disk space.
Anyway, here is how the directory tree looks:
SUOSWS""::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.DECW] ! BOOKREADER FILES
SUOSWS""::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.ULTRIX.BIBLE] ! KJV BIBLE
.BOM] ! BOOK OF MORMON
.D_AND_C] ! D & C
.POGP] ! PEARL OF GREAT
PRICE
SUOSWS""::USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC.VMS.BIBLE] ! KJV BIBLE
.BOM] ! BOOK OF MORMON
.D_AND_C] ! D & C
.POGP] ! PEARL OF GREAT
PRICE
As I mentioned in previous replies, PLEASE use FTSV (SPOOL) to copy the files.
If you have any problems or anything, please feel free to contact me.
Enjoy the scriptures. Please read them daily.
Best Regards,
Frank

356.7 | How much do we need? | CSC32::S_JOHNSON | SMOP=Small Matter of Programming | Mon Jul 22 1991 18:23 | 5 |
| Hi Frank,
How much disk space are we talking here?
scott
|
356.8 | | SUOSW4::WILLOUGHBY | FRANKly speaking | Tue Jul 23 1991 08:53 | 55 |
| SHORT ANSWER (ALL sizes are rounded up):
SAVESET (HAS BOTH VMS & ULTRIX STANDARD WORKS): @34000 blocks = 17 MB
VMS STANDARD WORKS: @15000 blocks = 8 MB
ULTRIX STANDARD WORKS: @15000 blocks = 8 MB
KJV BIBLE @10000 blocks = 5 MB
BOOK OF MORMON @ 3000 blocks = 2 MB
DOCTRINE & COVENENTS @ 1500 blocks = 1 MB
PEARL OF GREAT PRICE @ 350 blocks = 200 KB
The saveset of the scriptures (containing the ULTRIX & VMS VERSIONS)
is located in USER$DISK5:[WILLOUGHBY.LDS.PUBLIC]. The ULTRIX & VMS
files are both the same size and are about 15,000 blocks each (@7.5MB).
If you are interested in the Bookreader format of the KJV, you will
need 82511 blocks (@42MB) of free disk space. Unfortunately, I WILL
NOT be able to put the Bookreader KJV into the DECW directory like
I originally planned due to disk space limitations. 8^(
HOWEVER, I DO have Bookreader KJV them on TK50 and can make them available
to someone - with the stipulation that they make them public so that
others can copy them. FWIW, since the ascii text scriptures are now
available, AND most people have limited disk space (including me), it
would be impractical to put the Bookreader KJV onto disk (my disk anyway).
FWIW, if you put all of the the ascii scriptures in the same directory,
you can display one or more verses with one command (SEARCH). Those
using Ultrix can use grep or other similar utility.
An example of the syntax follows:
SEARCH/WINDOW=(0,20) YOURDISKNAME::[YOURNAME.SCRIPTURES]*.*;* "NE1 1:1"
OR
SEARCH/WINDOW=(20) YOURDISKNAME::[YOURNAME.SCRIPTURES]*.*;* "NE1 1:1"
BTW, if you copy the saveset, please do us all a favor and make your
saveset publicly available (recommended protection=w:r) and make an
annoucement regarding the location of the scriptures on your system.
Please make the announcement in a reply to this note (356.last).
It would be a real waste of resources if everybody copied them from
Germany when somebody already has them in the States (Massachusetts
or somewhere).
The KJV Bible in the directories is currently in another type of format.
I should have the KJV in the VMS & Ultrix formats in a couple of
days (please be patient). To avoid confusion, I protected the directories
containing the KJV Bible. The protection will be changed back to W:R
as soon as the new version is available.
Best Regards,
Frank
