308.0. "Biblical Archaeology" by CASPRO::BACKLOG () Wed Feb 21 1990 09:38
I just heard on the radio (Paul Harvey) that archaeologists at the
site of the ancient city of Jericho have discovered evidence that makes
it appear that something caused the walls of the city fell flat all at once.
That's all I know for the moment. If it's on Paul Harvey, I expect it
will turn up in at least some newspapers as well. I seldom read
newpapers myself, so maybe someone else will spot it and add some
detail to the story.
I'd like to know just what it is that they found and how they interpret
it to arrive at that conclusion. It should be very interesting, since
the account of the walls of Jericho falling is well known.
From what little I know of archaeological methods, I imagine that their
findings have something to do with stratigraphy, which is the method of
determining relative dating by the principle of things of the same age
being found at the same depth (in strata) as other things, the newer
things being on top of the older. One might expect to find pieces of
the top of the wall on the same level as the bottom of the wall, and in
this case, some evidence to suggest a cause. But that's only a
simplistic guess on my part.

308.1 | And the wall come tumbling down | SLSTRN::RONDINA | | Thu Feb 22 1990 09:05 | 7 |
| I caught the end of the same report on NPR (National Public Radio).
The conclusion was that the Biblical record was accurate and that the
walls probably fell due to an earthquake.
Anyone got any more info.

308.2 | You can't get there from here. | STEREO::CARDON | | Fri Apr 27 1990 09:18 | 21 |
| A PBS program called TESTAMENT which is being run in New Hampshire made
mention of Jericho. It stated that there have been scores of Jerichos
unearthed over the hundreds of years with each group claiming to have
found THE Jericho. It even reviewed the most recent Jericho discovered
only a few years ago. The recent claims sounded very much like the
older claims dispite the authors obvious belief that they finally got
it right this time.
My own belief is that we will never know the "real" Jericho since we do
not have an exeact location, and Jericho would look just like hundreds
of other Canaanite city occupied by Israelites which had its wall
rebuilt after portions fell down or were taken down. There are just
too many sites which would fit this description.
It was really rather poor planning on the part of the ancient Israelites
not to have left city name/date/population signs in each of their
cities so the tourist 4 to 5000 years later would be sure to know exactly
where to stand for pictures. :-)
I wrote a brief description of the program TESTAMENT in 64.61 for anyone
interested.
