159.0. "Search for Ancient Americans" by ONFIRE::PERM () Tue Aug 23 1988 14:50

I'm sure you will all get a copy in Departmental Mail, but I thought I
should make mention of it here.

Digital is sponsoring "The Infinite Voyage" series on Television. The
next episode is "The Search for Ancient Americans." Let me reprint the
description:

"In THE SEARCH FOR ANCIENT AMERICANS, archaeologists trace the
migrations of the first people across The New World thousands of years
before the voyage of Christopher Columbus. A puzzling maze of roads in
New Mexico's Chaco Canyon have long intrigued scientists. With new
scientific tools, they may have unravelled the mystery and discovered
the largest ceremonial site in North America. The stone glyphs on Maya
ruins in the Copan Valley in Honduras tell stories about the rulers of
a culture more complex than we ever imagined."

I gather that some of the latest discoveries will be presented. Of
course, we all know what they'll eventually find out (and won't they
be surprised!), but in the meantime it's fun to see the parallels
between what they find and what we already know.

In the Boston area, it will be shown on Wed., Sept 7th, at 8:00pm on
WGBH (Channel 2), and again on Wed., Sept 14th, at 8:00pm on WCVB
(Channel 5). It will also be braodcast nationally via cable on WGN and
WWOR. The flier I received has additional dates and times for Atlanta,
Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Hartford, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New
York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. If any of you
do not get the flier and want to know the times in these places,
please let me know and I will post.

159.2Good Show!ONFIRE::PERMKevin R. OsslerThu Sep 08 1988 17:1434
I taped it last night, and it was a good thing I did. The missionaries
dropped by half way through the show, just as it ws getting good. I'll
have to watch it again soon.

But from what I gathered, there were numerous parallels between the
show and what we know of pre-Columbian America from the Book of
Mormon. Some observations:

I was intrigued by the references to Temples.
 - the fact that the Temples exist at all.
 - the fact that the ancient temples were grandly designed and highly
   ornate.
 - the function of the priest as a "prophet" who would "go into the
Temple, speak to God, and then come forth and announce the
   revelation to the assembled multitudes."

I did not listen closely enough to figure out at what point in history
the ceremonies the show spoke of took place. Before 400 AD? After?

The beginning part of the show was preoccupied with the crossing of
various tribes from Siberia over to Alaska and on down the coast to
eventually make settlements throughout the Americas. It should be said
that Mormons do not claim that the descendents of Lehi were the *only*
ones to colonize the Americas. There is evidence that the Americas
have been visited many, many times by various peoples from many, many
origins. The Book of Mormon contains the story of only certain periods
out of the history of the Americas.

Even so, the Book of Mormon says that *none* shall come unto this
land, save it shall be by the hand of God. Interesting.

I'll have more to contribute later.

159.3It was OKAY...SLSTRN::RONDINAFri Sep 09 1988 00:139
I watched with GREAT EXPECTATIONS for some new and startling finds.
While the show was interesting, it was nothing to write home about.
Perhaps our vested interest in Pre_-Columbian Archeology and parallels
to the B of M makes us a little more knowledgeable about Ancient
American History. I was looking for more evidence supporting Thor
Heyerdal's theories. And what of the discoveries of the Phoenecians
    landing in Brazil?

Sorry folks, even though I watched with an open mind, I found nothing
to support the B of M. The lack of evidence would seem to discredit
the B of M. If it is real, then why does not God reveal it through
    archeology?

The show wasn't about the BoM and therefore wasn't centered on it. It
was a very generic conservative show highlighting for a public
audience some of the research done in the area of ancient american
studies. Just because this show didn't come out with any evidence,
doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Lack of evidence can not discredit anything, because there is always a
non-zero probability that evidence may be discovered in the future.

I posted last week in 156.19, Hugh Nibley's comments on the question
why direct archaeological evidence hasn't yet been found. I agree with him
that direct proof of the Book of Mormon will eventually come from Central
America.
