48.0. "On being a Christian" by USRCV1::JEFFERSONL (Jesus is Lord) Thu Feb 11 1988 12:40

    TO ALL MORMONS,

IF you are indeed a "Christian", Why do you tend to separate
yourselves from other christians; why do you call yourselves Mormons?
Also, from what I was told, you have your own Bible along with the
Holy Bible. Being that we believe in the Trinity (FATHER, SON, HOLY
SPIRIT), why do we have differant beliefs? Why do Christian say
    that Mormons are not christians?

Well, the question is akin to why is there a DEC and an IBM. Why
is it at shows the IBM people (in general) will not talk to people
from other companies? Why did one IBM person leave a class I had
years ago when she found out six DEC people were in it? People
with strong convictions are usually afraid of others of strong
convictions and tend to build walls between them. And organizations
    support the process.

I think in general we call ourselves Mormon because that is what
others call us, but amongst ourselves we tend to use "LDS", or
"saints", or "members", to refer to the body of the Church. What
you were told about the Bible is partly true, but it is not one
of the four standard works accepted by the Church as cannon. One
could go for many years, as I have, without ever using it or needing
to use it, and not miss it.

As to the question of different beliefs, are you talking about groups,
organizations or individuals. As individuals i think we have different
beliefs because we are different in intelligence, schooling,
experience, and a bunch of other reasons. I am constantly amazed
at the difference in beliefs among people in the same religion,
never mind different religions. And in the last few years i have
come to accept that. I believe it is not so much important as to
which organization one belongs to as to what is in someones heart,
if we define that as their desire to be good, without getting into
the rathole of what is good. So as to organizations and groups, i can
see differences because they are made up of individuals. If what
they do is good and has truth within it, is that bad if as individuals
we are striving to live the best we can with the knowledge we have?

Why do Christians say that Mormons are not Christian. I think that
as i have observed groups and individuals devaluing others it was
mostly to ensure in their own minds the worth of their beliefs. Why
do democrats rile against republicans, conservatives against liberals, etc.
If you want to see where we learn this activity you only have to
watch kids in action. What one kid is doing or has is always better
than anyone else, and arguments persist. My belief is that people
who put down another to firm up their own position or beliefs, are
on shaky ground and had better do some internal auditing lest they
run out of others to use to build their faith and find they have
nothing left. As I said, we learn this as kids, along with many
other games we play, and I have found the hard part of life is to unlearn
the games, and play by the rules of a higher order.

Then again I might be wrong and it happens cause people don't have
much better to do and like to argue. :^)

We call ourselves The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
That's a bit long for some people to say every time, so we get called
    Mormons or LDS sometimes.

We are a very evangelical church, and we seek to bring the truths we
have to all people, including other Christians. Other churches don't
    like this.

> Also, from what I was told, you have your own Bible along with the
> Holy Bible.

We do have additional scriptures. We believe that God has spoken
to other nations besides those who wrote the Bible, and that He
commanded them to write it down. We believe that God speaks even
    today to living prophets.

The books that we accept as scripture are:

The Holy Bible We commonly use the King James Version

The Book of Mormon This book contains writings of prophets
who anciently came from Jerusalem to
    				the American continents. The record
was kept on gold plates, which was
    				translated by Joseph Smith.

Doctrine & Covenants	A compilation of revelations in modern
    				times.

Pearl of Great Price	This is a collection of revealed writings
of Moses, Abraham, and a historical
account by Joseph Smith of the events
leading to the founding of the church.

> Being that we believe in the Trinity (FATHER, SON, HOLY
> SPIRIT), why do we have differant beliefs? Why do Christian say
> that Mormons are not christians?

We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ,
and in the Holy Ghost. We follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Some say that we are not Christians because they believe we do not
accept Jesus Christ as our personal Saviour. They say that we believe
our works save us. In fact, we *do* accept Jesus Christ as our personal
Savior. We believe that it is *only* through Jesus that we can be
saved, but that He has set certain conditions for his salvation to take
effect. These conditions include faith, repentance, baptism, receiving
the Gift of the Holy Ghost by the laying on of hands, and obedience to
the commandments of God. We do *not* believe that these things save
us, but that Jesus saves us, *if* we do these things.

Others claim that the Jesus Christ we believe in is a "different"
Jesus than the one that Christians worship. The Jesus Christ we
believe in is The Only Begotten Son of God, Jesus, who was born
of Mary in Bethlehem, who died for us, was resurrected, and will
    return again in glory.

Now, there's other arguements about raceism; the Mormons or LDS
believe that any race that is not white, is cursed, is that true?

NOTE: I've seen a few scriptures from "YOUR" bible.

HERE'S A LITTLE THOUGHT FOR WHOEVER RECIEVES:

How can you believe in whom you have not heard?
How can you hear without a preacher, How can he preach unless he
    is "SENT"?

But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and
in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That
if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe
in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt
be saved. For with the HEART man believeth unto righteousness; and
with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

For there is no differant between the Jew and Greek: for the same
Lord over all is rich unto ALL that call upon him.

MAY GOD ADD A BLESSING TO TE READING AND UNDERSTANDING OF HIS WORD!!

I'm guessing that a lot of discussion will occur concerning racial issues,
and I've created note 50 as a base note for that activity.

So true. And may we believe those that God sends!

You have stated an important part of the requirements for salvation,
but there are other things that pertain to salvation, in addition.
See the following notes in this conference for discussions of this:

	4.24 -< Faith >-
	4.25 -< Christ is the Gift! >-
	4.26 -< Salvation is Conditional >-
	4.29 -< Repentance >-
	4.32 -< Obedience to Jesus Christ >-

> For there is no differant between the Jew and Greek: for the same

    So true!

48.6There are BIG differencesFIDDLE::LEZASWed Feb 17 1988 14:439
There are some major differences between the Mormons and the
Christians! We do not believe any where near the same things.
My first section in my report in Note 38 is almost
complete. An overview of the doctrinal differences will be mentioned
    there.

The whole story has yet to be told.
