| Well, it's looking more and more like Parcells is going to be coaching in New
Jersey, but with the <UGH!> Jets.
In my opinion, that's just going to cement this egotistical view that folks
have of George Young.
Sure, George will counter with "But I needed someone now", but if he has waited
two weeks, and put his freakin' ego on the back burner, he could have gotten
Pacells back, and done what was best for the team.
Now, withing five to seven years, Parcells will be taking the Jets to the
playoffs while the Giants wallow through four years of another George Young
handpicked coach....
Thanks George, you freakin' fool....

thing up.
By the way, Fassel has hired most of his staff. My favorite hire is the
offensive coordinator who isn't. I think the name is Jim Skipper and he was a
former RBC (remember TRBC?? ;-) ). Given that Fassel makes the playbook and
calls the plays, I don't know what this guy will do.
Anyway, the rest of the hires have been so uninteresting, that I haven't been
motivated to note them here.

We're going to see just what George Young wants. Too funny.
The guys on WFAN are giving it a positive spin, but can't avoid the fact that
Fossil has done NOTHING as an OC. He's been on teams that have done NOTHING.
George Young will be retired or dead before the Giants play for it all again.

You really think that Parcells/Young/Mara could have buried whatever
hatchets they had left over from when Parcells was here last? I don't
think there was anyway for Parcells to come back to the Giants.
And as far as Fassel doing nothing as an OC, you obviously weren't
watching the Cards under Butty. They actually had a somewhat interesting
offense, given that they had no QB and no OL.

Well, I'm reminded of Tinkers-Evers-Chance, one of the best DP combinations
ever, who wouldn't speak to each other off the field.
If you want to win a Super Bowl, you go after the BEST coach available out
there. At least that's what you or I would do. George Young, who has
Wellington Mara in his back pocket, chose to go after a stiff who would agree
with him, and who's biggest indictment so far is that he things Dave Brown is
an NFL caliber QB.
That's the same George Young who so knowingly stated "We won two Super Bowls
this way..."
Ahem, uh, George, wake up, the game has passed you buy, you blithering idiot!
>And as far as Fassel doing nothing as an OC, you obviously weren't

Interesting doesn't put championships on the table. Interesting is the run and
shoot, or Marv Levy's K-gun.
Most of the OCs who go on to become successful coaches come out of successful
programs. I'd hardly call the Cardinals successful.
I'm telling you right now that Fossil is going to come in here and do things
George's way. You know, George Young, the man who hasn't had a first round
pick pan out since Rodney Hampton six years ago? So this Genius George Young
is going to dictate to Fossil what's what, and the first order of business is
to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear (read that Dave Brown). I'm tellin'
ya, it cannot be done.
Fossil (interesting or not) :== more of the same.....

It's quite a bit different when you got 3 guys who have to stay 90 feet

to be in the same room. That's a bad analogy.

And if you had judged Parcells after as harshly after one year on the
job, you'd be hoping he was gone. Fassel actually had less than a year,
the Cards had no plan (they still don't have a GM or Player Personnel
guy) and Buddy had raped the offense to build up [sic] his defense.

| Well, its been a long time since I have said anything but the
Headcoaching issues stirred up some thoughts. Before this, I've been
in such a lull over this past season it just hasn't been worth the
effort to even talk about the "Little" Big Blue.
Fassel has no real credentials. He was with the Giants, left to a
losing team Cardinals and really didn't have time to do anything. Where
did he come from before the Giants? A very low profile, quiet, meek
head coach to be manipulated by Young. Young would have never gone for
a high profile coach, someone who would have challenged him, caused
controversy, etc. Fassel is focused on making Duck Brown a NFL QB.
Chuck Knoll was ruined, if I recall, by doing the same when he stuck
with Mark Malone for so long. Fassel will not question or buck the
system. He knows he is the head coach and only the coach. Nothing more.
Which is the way Young wants it. Think of all the coaches out there
getting positions, Ditka, Vermeil, Ross, Reeves, other then the 49ers
selection Fassel is the unknown, unmentionable name. A darkhorse?
I think not. A buttboy, yes-man....odds are for this...
As for Parcells. He would have never came back to NYG. Not while
Young is in place. Remember, He wants Youngs job. Not to work for Young
no matter how much money you offer him. Contract terms are in limbo
with him right know anyways. He probably won't coach next year but
could end up a GM for the Jets for a year then GM/Coach next year.
He gets a 1 year HC with a year contract and then next year Bill is
GM/HC and the HC is now on Tuna's staff. He beats the system, gets his
team and is still in Jersey. 2 years and Parcells has the NYJ as
a wildcard. Think about it, 1-15. He can only make it better and come
out smelling like a rose. He goes down as the greatest coach ever.
Especially if he can bring the condemned Green machine to the playoffs.
Perfect situation for him to become immortalized in the NFL.

| I'm not happy about Parcells going to the Jets. To me, that would be similar
to Ted Williams or Carl Yastrzemski closing their careers with the Yankees.
I like Bill Parcells, and think he's one of the best. He'll never pass
Lombardi IMO, but he's on the step right below.
Fossil will amount to nothing. As Giants fans we must accept the fact that the
Giants are going to be out of it for quite a while. George Young hasn't had a
first round draft pick pan out in six years. He hasn't had a decent QB since
he mistakenly let Simms go.
I cannot see the situation getting any better. As I said, we can only hope
that Wellington Mara (whom I'm assuming is Young's biggest and perhaps only
supporter) drops dead, or Young himself drops dead, because if neither of these
things happen, George Young will be eating strained peas through a straw at the
age of 97 and still trying to convince us that he knows the game. It could be
THAT long of a wait.
Actually, I'm very disappointed in Fossil's selection, but it does set up an
interesting scenario. We just saw Bill Parcells, functioning as GM/Coach, take
the Patriots to the Super Bowl. Dan Reeves, the other guy who bumped heads
with Jug Ears George recently, has got his GM/Coach position down in Atlanta.
It will be interesting to see if the GM/Coach can do better over the next
several years than George and his Yes-Man will....
Believe it or not, I'm bettin' on Reeves.....

arrival of Tuna and his movers to his new home. It's a beautiful house - but
not as big as I would have expected. Doesn't look too secure either. Maybe
I'll go over and chat someday. ;-)
Read an article today about how Fassel is off to the combines and was able to go
through Newark airport without being recognized. He didn't offer any insight on
what positions they were interested in with the #7 pick. They did note that he,
Boisture and the team head shrink have been working together fabulously....
The Giants have been trying to rework some contracts so they can load up on
those "3rd tier" free agents. Ron Stone took a huge paycut for this season
(he'll only get $200,000) in exchange for a 1-year extension worth $2M.

| NFL players voting on playing surfaces said that Giants Stadium had the 5th
worse in the league. So, it looks like the Giants will be getting a new surface
this fall. They are looking into what is described as a "grass/synthetic"

stadiums.

| I have heard of some of this stuff. Seems they intermix real grass with
fake grass. They put a mesh of synthentic grass over some sod. The real
grass grows through the holes in the mesh. The two combine to form a
surface simlar to real grass that is more durable than sod. With the
pounding that Giants stadium takes this might be enough to maintain an
almost real surface.
When I when in Giants stadium for the worldcup I loved the look of real
turf. It would be so cool for Giants stadium to have real grass.

Sounds interesting. Probably helps to keep the sod from being torn up - which
probably means a player's feet could still "stick" to it, the bad part of
artificial turf.
In the end, Young will probably have them on standard artificial stuff.
First look at the draft! Here's Kiper's first shot at what the draft will look
like (up to the Giants pick):
1-N.Y. Jets, Orlando Pace*, OT, Ohio State
2-New Orleans, Peyton Manning*, QB, Tennessee.
3-Atlanta, Darrell Russell*, DT, USC.
4-Baltimore, Peter Boulware*, DE/OLB, Florida State.
5-Detroit, Shawn Springs*, CB, Ohio State.
6-St. Louis, Bryant Westbrook, CB, Texas.
7-N.Y. Giants, Dwayne Rudd*, OLB, Alabama. Kiper's comment: With collegiate
defensive end/outside linebackers often solely responsible for attacking from
the outside, it is rare to find a multi-dimensional type who can do everything.

| The Giants signed Denny Marcin, Univ of Ill. defensive coordinator, as their
defensive line coach. Fassel's staff is no complete.
Jessie Armstead joins Stone as Giants who have had their contracts reworked. He
signed a 3-year $5.5M contract last year. His new deal adds two more years and
is now worth $10.6M. The Giants save about $600,000 this year. Seems to me
that more and more players are being forced into taking big cuts today for the
possibility of really big bucks down the road. Odds are that they'll never see
those dollars. Instead, they'll renegotiate again or be waived.
Jesse Campbell is rumored to possibly be waived to make even more cap room.
Strahan, Miller, Bishop, Cross, and Williams are also targets for renegotiating.

| The Giants officially announced the entire coaching staff yesterday.
Def. coordinator John Fox says he'll use an agressive, attacking 4-3 defense.
He noted the lack of sacks last season as a problem.
QB coach Ron Dowhower on Dave Brown: "He's tough, he's mobile, he's got a strong
arm and he's got experience. That's hard to find at that position. It's hard to
find a player that can play that position and succeed at this level of play. He
has those qualities. And the good ones that I've been around have those
qualities."
<gag>
Fassel says there will be an open competition for the starting RB position. RB
coach (and "offensive coordinator"), Jim Skipper feels that Hampton has plenty
left. They plan to start over with Wheatley from scratch.
Fassel identified left tackle (Bishop), defensive tackle (Agnew, Harris) and
safety (Sehorn & Campbell?) as positions that they might try to upgrade though
free agency. It's believed the Giants are about $3M under the cap.
The Giants have a single "transistional player" tag available to use. GY says
they won't use it.
Lastly, the chairman for the NJSEA (which controls Giants Stadium) says new
astroturf will be installed for the upcoming season. However, he says it will
be the last rug installed. In 2-3 years, technology will allow for a natural
grass surface to be used.

Hmmm, an agressive attacking style 4-3 defense. I guess we're going to get the

The Giants appear to be seriously interested in Larry Centers. They

Centers is likely to get a lot of attention from other teams but has

Brown is the achilles heel of this team, and until George Young has the balls
to admit that to himself, and to get a decent coach, this team will go nowhere.
However, this will be a great season because it is a referendum of sorts.
Reeves in Atlanta, Parcells in New York, and George Young with his egocentric

The bottom line is that Centers probably doesn't like NY so much that he's

Of course, have you noticed anybody making big bucks who hasn't been approached

The whole Larry Centers thing looks to have been a ploy by his agent to jack up
his asking price. The agent has been passing rumors about offers from the
Giants and visits to interview with them. In the meantime, Centers wants $3M
per. The Giants are about $1M under the cap. Nobody else is biting at the
opportunity to pay the guy $3M. The agent did drive the Cards up to $2.5M, so
he'll probably stay.

I think Centers is overvalued. He's great as a receiver out of the

Who wants to spend $2.5 mil on a back who is only used on 3rd down?
Especially the Giants who are overstocked at rb. In these days of the

have changed teams. Last year, at this time, there was close to 30 moves.
One big reason is that the cap only increased $700,000. With new TV contracts

| The Reeves-Sehorn thing is really heating up and now it seems more possible that
the Giants could be holding the 3rd and 7th draft picks this year.
Reeves asked Sehorn's representatives to come up with a number that would be
acceptable to them and one that the Giants wouldn't match. The number came back
as $12.4M over 4 years with a $4M signing bonus. Furthermore, the contract was
to be *guaranteed*. Guaranteed contracts are almost unheard of in the NFL.
So now it's up to the Falcons to decide to accept/reject/modify the offer.
Reeves' thinking on this is that good CBs are a rare commodity and he figures it
would cost him more to sign the #3 pick in the draft.
The Rams are also interested in Sehorn and are expected to him him visit soon.
What could kill the Falcon deal is that they are talking about swapping 1st
round picks with the Seahawks (11th). In case you think that they'd do this in
order to give up a lesser pick for Sehorn, there is a rule which would prohibit
this.

What does Sehorn have to lose? He's young, and he's surely not going to win a
championship on the Giants any time soon. Go to Alanta, make his 12 mil, push
his value up over the next four years, then hop onto a contender for the
championship to cap the career...

The Falcons and Seahawks swapped a bunch of draft picks including first rounders
(Falcons @ #3 and Seahawks @ #11). Reeves then thought he'd try to sign Sehorn,
giving the Giants the #11 pick instead of #3. Problem is that there are rules
that say you have to have your highest draft pick in your possession to do so.
Although it was reported in several NY papers last week before the trade
happened, Reeves was unaware of the rule. So some NY reporters are having a
good laugh at the Falcons for giving Reeves so much control over operations.
