4266.0. "ALL-IN-1 being able to tag Windows/DOS file formats.." by PCIGAT::Tilley () Thu Jun 16 1994 17:31

        I had someone send me a document from ALL-IN-1 (VT320) and
add two attachent (binary) one was a Microsoft Word V6 and the other
was a Excel V5 Spreadsheet. The person that sent me this document
with the 2 attachments imported them from a VMS directory where they
had PathWorks and imported them using the COM DT RVC options within
ALL-IN-1. When I recieved this document with attachments I could read
the Cover Memo fine but the attachments had a FGN tag placed on them
both. Is there something done wrong in attaching these DOS files
within ALL-IN-1 from a VT?

    That's what is supposed to happen. ALL-IN-1 can't convert them, so it
    just gives them to you that way. You should be able to copy them back
    down to DOS and use them.

4266.2Is there a WAY????PCIGAT::TilleyFri Jun 17 1994 16:553
	I agree to that BUT is there a way for ALL-IN-1 to add
a tag so that TeamLinks can understand it OTHER than exporting
it to DOS or a FILECAB??

    There is a HANDLING field (often known as FORMAT) within ALL-IN-1 - use
    U for Update to be able to change it.

    Changing the HANDLING of an ATTACHED document is a LOT harder - so you
    will need to File Attached first.

    The values that you can change HANDLING to are in FORMAT.DAT (a file
    accessed via the FORMAT entry form).

    If all of this is set up OK, then you will be getting close to having a
    document that TeamLinks will understand. BUT it is still A LOT EASIER
    for the originating user, and all people that he sends to, if he was
    using TeamLinks as well! - He obviously has a PC, in order to be able
    to create Word 6 documents - so get him to install TeamLinks and try
    again.
4266.4Reverse gateway routed messages O.K....PCIGAT::TilleyMon Jun 20 1994 14:545
	No they are sending it from MS MAil via the route discussed
in the original note. The thing that puzzles me is that when a TeamLinks
user sends mail with those same attachments to a MS Mail user and
goes across the reverse gateway route the message and all
attachments are recieved as they should be.

        What's the puzzle? The TeamLinks and VT interfaces are two
        different animals. One interface knows about DOS file types
        through an association file and the other interface uses a
        different association method which may or may not be able to
        handle the same DOS file type uniformly in all operations.

        If the character cell version of ALL-IN-1 doesn't work as you
        desire, just customize away. In the case you've described, I
        would expect RCV to be customized to determine what HANDLING type,
        other then FOREIGN, to place on the documents with these
        extensions.
