V3.1 will be the first version of ALL-IN-1 to run on Alpha. V3.0 is not
being ported to Alpha.
> - when will ALL-IN-1 run on ALPHA?
The currently announced plan is that V3.1 will be shipped in July 1994.

4244.4 | Advice needed on ALPHA migration | ZPOVC::WENDYLAI | YSL | Tue Jul 05 1994 06:21 | 37 |

Hi,
my customer would like to migrate to ALPHA AXP when ALL-IN-1 on ALPHA is ready
in August.
They are currently running :
ALL-IN-1 V3.0a
TeamLinks Connection Package 2.0
Message Router V3.2
TeamRoute for ALL-IN-1 V1.1
DECfax Mail V1.1
DEC Notes V2.4
VTX 5.x
VTX accounting (ASSETS)
As only ALL-IN-1 IOS, TLC and TeamRoute for ALL-IN-1 are available on ALPHA
AXP, can this customer migrate their ALL-IN-1 system to ALPHA with the rest
still running on the VAX?
How about Message Router ? Must it be on the same LAN as the ALL-IN-1 IOS ?
Due to security reason, this customer has three DECNET Area (subnet). If each
subnet is running ALL-IN-1 IOS on ALPHA AXP, does it need one Message Router
running on a VAX in each subnet or only one VAX is enough for the whole
network. When using remote Message Router, will the ALL-IN-1 users and
TeamLinks users be able to use DDS ?
I suppose DECfax Mail can run on the remote Message Router; both DEC Notes and
VTX running on the VAX can be accessed remotely from the ALL-IN-1 ALPHA system.
Is my assumption correct ?
Thanks for any pointer or input.
Rgds,
- Wendy.

| Hi,
TeamRoute for ALL-IN-1 is not available on ALPHA AXP. The SPD does
point this out.
Cheers

4244.6 | NOTES - yes, VTX - no | IOSG::NEWLAND | Richard Newland, IOSG, REO2-G/L2 | Tue Jul 05 1994 11:38 | 8 |
| The DEC NOTES client and server code has been ported to Alpha AXP. You can
run it on an AXP or VAX.
VTX has not been ported to Alpha AXP so if you are using an AXP you cannot
use VTX.

| You should be able to use one VAX to service all your users (don't know
performance details), but this means that at least some of them will have a new
mail address. This can be trapped and their addresses replaced tranparently to
the users if necessary.
You will need MR V3.3A. This introduced the mechanism to make use of MR on a VAX
from an AXP, ie using remote MR. That meant remote DDS was offered for the first
time. However, remote DDS supports enquiries only. ALL-IN-1 had to come up with
a way of offering DDS updates (since operations like Create User do that in
ALL-IN-1). So, if your MR VAX is part of the cluster, the DDS customer will
notice no difference. However, if it is a remote VAX, elsewhere on the net,
remote DDS update operations have to be done manually by the system manager.
ALL-IN-1 V3.1 helps by sending a message to the manager with the exact
instructions needed to do this, ie a .com file which should be run on the DDS
node.

4244.8 | which means no migration ??? | ZPOVC::WENDYLAI | YSL | Thu Jul 07 1994 16:02 | 21 |

re .5, .6, .7
Thank you for all the input. Looks like my customer will have to wait
for the TeamRoute PC server to be available and prepare to drop VTX
before they could consider migrating ALL-IN-1 to ALPHA AXP.
What kind of ALL-IN-1 installed based we are targetting for ALL-IN-1
ALPHA AXP ? I am sure most of them have various layered prodcut
running on top of it. How should we advise our customer to migrate
?????
I truly appreciate the engineeing effort in the ALL-IN-1 ALPHA migration
but customer will be more disappointed when they realize there are many
other layered products yet to be or will not be supported on ALPHA.

- Wendy.

| Wendy,
If you have documentable dollar shortfalls with customer names that
this shortage of products on AXP will produce, then please let us know,
so that we can pass it onto the guys who make the decisions.
Graham
PS thanks for the thanks for our efforts...
