4157.0. "WPS+ to Wordperfect Doc Conversions?" by NYOS01::LABOMBARD (Nous Sommes Du Soleil) Wed May 11 1994 16:16

    Hello;

I am investigating a question a potential client asked me yesterday,
and after reviewing all "relevent" notes, have not seen the answer
I was looking for. I am hopeing someone can help.

    Situation:

Client has ALL-IN-1 and system users have been using WPS+ for
document editing. They have choosen to move to WordPerfect under
OpenVMS (or possibly integrated under ALL-IN-1) soon.

The client has asked Digital Consulting to provide a "fixed-price"
estimate for converting their existing WPS+ documents into a
format suitable for use with WordPerfect.

    Questions

    	1. Assuming WordPerfect integrated under ALL-IN-1, Are WPS+ documents
"converted" into WordPerfect format for editing, if the editor of
choice is set to WordPerfect? (In other words, is automatic
conversion done similar to the case when editor is set to EDT
and doc is a .WPL? or vice-versa)

    	2. If there is no automatic conversion performed - is there a
"standard" method for converting the .WPL documents into a format
suitable for WordPerfect? (this would be permanent conversion).
An earlier note (around the 1992 time frame) eluded to KEYPAK
as a possible solution, then was rebuffed as not a viable
solution. Any information on this ?

I have attempted to look at the WordPerfect Notes Converence, but have
not been successful thus far (not reachable!)

    Thanks for any help

    Best Regards.

Hello Don,

Before joining Digital I worked 4 years as an ALL-IN-1 manager and the last 1
year of these 4 years, I've enjoyed myself with ALL-IN-1, WordPerfect/VMS,
ALL-IN-1 wordPerfect integration and last but not least WPS-PLUS <-> WordPerfect
conversions.

Yes, WPS-PLUS formatted documents are automaticaly converted to WordPerfect
formatted documents. After exiting WordPerfect or saving the doucment, the
document will be converted back to it's orginal format i.e. WPS-PLUS.

This behaviour can lead to unexpected results. For example WPS-PLUS documents
containing TDE pictures after they've been edited in WordPerfect will still
contain these pictures BUT outside the TDE editor. This behaviour also applies
to certain control blocks.

Well , you could try the CD (convert Document) option within ALL-IN-1.

Last but not least, Keep in mind a conversion will never be 100% complete.

large numbers of documents (50% ~ 80%) which are created in the past will
never be edited again, So converting all existing documents is not really needed

Martin

4157.2That's what I thought. - thanksNYOS01::LABOMBARDNous Sommes Du SoleilWed May 11 1994 17:1225
    Thanks, Martin;

I had a hunch that the auto convert mechanism would work, with certain
limitations of course. This information will help. The client is
a local govenrment agency, and obviously if I can tell them if they
choose to integrate the WordPerfect into ALL-IN-1 then the conversion
question becomes (nearly) moot, AND it will save them money - Great.

I did some further checking in the Keypak conference and learned that
there are two steps to converting (as of mid 1993). First, one must
convert the WPS+ doc to "DX" format. Then the DX format can be
converted to WordPerfect, using the KEYPAK software.

Obviously, in any conversion there are items that will not convert
    completely.

The other questions I had for the client are obvious as well -
    1. how many documents do you have
    2. how many do you want converted.
    3. how many do you NEED converted...

    Thanks for the help.

    BEst Regards
    Don
4157.3More questions, of course.NYOS01::LABOMBARDNous Sommes Du SoleilThu May 12 1994 19:1217
    Hi again;

(Martin - if your still there...)

What is required (software wise) to provide the automatic conversion
feature you mentioned? (KEYPAK? or is it built into the WordPerfect
ALL-IN-1 integration kit? Or some other I don't know about).

What has been your experience in integrating WordPerfect under
ALL-IN-1, in regard to time estimate (1 day, 1 week, 1 month...)

We are examining the alternative of converting 14,500 WPS+ documents to
WP, versus integrating WP into ALL-IN-1 and allowing the S/W to do the
    conversions on the fly.

    Thanks once again.

All you need is ALL-IN-1, WordPerfect VAX/VMS and WordPerfect/ALL-IN-1
integration kit.

The integration is rather smooth. On our site we did the installation of
WordPerfect and the WordPerfect/ALL-IN-1 integration in day.
The steps in detail are:

1. Install WordPerfect VAX/VMS (1 hr)
2. Set up your global WordPerfect settings (Currency formats, date and time,
Measure units ect, ect...) ( hr)
3. Select within WordPerfect the printers you'd like to use with WordPerfect
(depending of the number of printers and printertypes)
4. Install WordPerfect/ALL-IN-1 integration (1 hr)
5. Setup the links between the ALL-IN-1 printertypes and the WordPerfect
   printer types. (~ hr)

WordPerfect VAX/VMS is able to convert WPS-PLUS documents to WordPerfect
documents, $WP51/CONVERT=DOCUMEMT/FROM=WPL <wpsplus doc> <WP doc>. The problem
is to get the converted documents back into ALL-IN-1.

At the customer's site, (Re. 1) I wrote a little program (ALL-IN-1 script)
which took care of the WPS-PLUS to WordPerfect conversion.

I don't have the sources anymore, but I'm quite sure I can program it again.

Have a nice weekend,

Martin

    Don,

since you're in the U.S you can contact the CSC here in Atlanta - we
will be providing some services in this area. Or the Product Manager
    may know more...

    regards,
