Digital, WordPerfect announce strategic partnership agreement
WordPerfect Corp. and Digital today announced that Digital will
provide WordPerfect for OpenVMS as an upgrade option for its ALL-IN-1
software and a migration option for its WPS-PLUS software users. In
addition, Digital will market, distribute and support WordPerfect
products worldwide.
"The broad platform support we are able to provide across DOS,
Windows, Macintosh and OpenVMS makes our partnership a natural," said
Mark Calkins, vice president, Product and Strategic Marketing at
WordPerfect. "This strategic alliance lays a foundation for future
opportunities for integration.
"Digital is committed to open computing environments and to
providing our customers with access to popular word processing
packages," said Dennis Roberson, vice president, Groupware. "Many of
our ALL-IN-1 customers are also WordPerfect users, and have asked for a
way to integrate WordPerfect onto their desktop. Now they have it."
ALL-IN-1 software is an integrated office system that allows
users in the OpenVMS environment to develop and implement strategic
business applications. It also provides capabilities for document
sharing and management. There are more than 5 million ALL -IN-1 users
worldwide. WordPerfect, with a current installed base of 15 million
users worldwide, is the all-time best-selling word processing
application available.
WordPerfect 6.0 for OpenVMS will operate on Digital's VAX and
Alpha AXP machines running OpenVMS and offers many of the same
functions and benefits contained in WordPerfect 6.0 on other platforms.
For example, WordPerfect 6.0 for OpenVMS will include such features as
graphics, outline, tokenized macros, and tables with formula and
spreadsheet capabilities. In addition, it will provide full file
compatibility with WordPerfect 6.0 on other platforms.
WordPerfect is also integrated with Digital's TeamLinks family
of client/server groupware applications; and with LinkWorks, the next
generation object-oriented groupware framework.
WordPerfect Corp., headquartered in Orem, Utah, is a privately
held company that develops business software to help people process,
share and present information across a wide variety of computer
operating systems. Among the company's key products are the world's
best-selling word processor, WordPerfect, as well as WordPerfect
Office, WordPerfect InForms, and WordPerfect Presentations. Recognized
for its leadership in providing outstanding customer support,
WordPerfect is represented throughout the world by 57 international
affiliates serving 117 countries with products in 28 languages.

|
Is this good or bad news ? Will this deal generate more
ALL-IN-1 revenues ?
I know that we can deliver better telephone/onsite support and
installation/upgrade services than WordPerfect themself or any third
party.
I hope we can use this conference to address integration related
problems.
Regrads,
Jan

But WordPerfect was bought out by Novell, does this affect the
agreement?
Plus, I consider WPO to be a competetive product in our groupware
wars. Now I kind of look stupid for pointing out its deficiencies.
Maybe if we could make TeamLinks the Mail product of choice under
it we could do some market damage. Any thoughts?

| re. last couple
the decision to go with WordPerfect rather than WPS-PLUS was made
sometime ago and seems to have been part of our office strategy for
some time - whether any of our office strategy has ever made sense
i leave up to others (:==:)
however all your questions should be addressed to the Product Manager
Gerry Campkin - now why does that name ring a bell?. i'll ask him to
take a look at this note.

| I knew I could trust Mr. Wicks to get me into trouble! Yes indeed
the contract with WordPerfect has been signed and announced. The
buy-out by Novell has not made any difference so far. A Sales
Update article will appear shortly and I should have the orderable
part numbers next week. I will post a summary of the agreement in
a future note.
As part of this agreement we have the right to sell any
WordPerfect product but will not sell WordPerfect Office.

| Will the ALL-IN-1 integration offered continue to use the existing mail
transport bodypart (decbody1)?
What expectations will this announcment set in terms of support for
Wordperfect documents in other MAILbus products (in particular things
like MRGATE, MRX, UMC, DECFAX, etc, etc)?
