3984.0. "Transfer of ALL-IN-1 2.4 prior to execution" by GIDDAY::BURT (Scythe my dandelions down, sport) Wed Mar 16 1994 03:45

Hello and greetings,

I HAVE looked at a number of the notes regarding transferring users (ALL
users) to one system from another. I have also read relevant the chapter in
the Tony book :^)

The customer site, although not the customer contact, are trying to kill off
ALL-IN-1. The customer has had no training due to lack of $$$, and hence there
is zip chance of the site paying for consulting work to be done.
BUT it would be nice to be able to "do the right thing".

Customer has to move, within 2 months, 60 ALL-IN-1 users (ie the whole of his
ALL-IN-1 system) from an 8350 to a Microvax 3400.
He is running ALL-IN-1 v2.4 (pretty much unpatched, with WPS-PLUS 3.1)
- upgrading to v3 at any time seems to be unlikely
Message Router is NOT running

All disks are RA80s
The system disk has ALL-IN-1
                    SHARE10->SHARE20
                    SHARE21->SHARE30
another user disk has
                    SHARE9->SHARE11
                    the majority of the users are on this disk...
there are a "sprinkling" of other users on other RA80s

The "new" system will be composed of 2 x RF72  & 1 x RF31

At the moment, the theory is to
. Install ALL-IN-1 on the target system & apply ALL 2.4 patches.
. Backup the shared areas and copy them over
. Backup the user files & copy them over
. Create the uaf entries for the users
. Modify the masterfile entries
. modify the user profiles
. do a PT & TRU
. tell the customer the whole procedure is unsupported :^(

Anyone feeling charitable??

Hello and greetings once more,

The customer is going to be running VMS v6.0 on the previously mentioned
system. I realize ALL-IN-1 2.4 is unlikely to be certified for v6, but am
wondering if anyone has come across 2.4 with v6.0 before, and whether there
were any problems.

    Chele,

    what does .1 have to do with .0?

    v2.4 runs ok on OpenVMS v6.0 but of course you should encourage
    the customer to upgrade to V3.0

    regards,

re   <<< Note 3984.2 by AIMTEC::WICKS_A "Atlanta's Most (In)famous Welshman" >>>

Hi Andrew,

.1 is the same site as .0 - The customer has had and will have NO training
whatsoever (on ANYTHING). The site WILL NOT purchase consulting services.
The site is winding down it's use of ALL-IN-1 - the decision has already been
made.
Is it really going to be worth upgrading to v3 when the site is only likely to
be active for, perhaps, 6 months?

Transfer Users under 2.4 is not something I have fond memories of. Whatever he
does is likely to be fairly painful - all I am trying to do is find the LEAST
painful method. If installing v3 then transferring users is less hassle, that
will be be option taken. Not having had someone wanting to do this before, I
am seeking advice.

3984.4pointer pleaseGIDDAY::BURTScythe my dandelions down, sportTue May 10 1994 08:3612
Hello and greetings again,

Does anyone have a pointer to the 2.4 patches? Ours seem to have been eaten by
a grue  :^(
I've found a couple, the release notes for which state that that a
prerequisite is ALL-IN-1 V2.4 and update 2.0. What is update 2.0?

Thanks & regards,

Chele
