3892.0. "HELP with V2.4 --> V3.0 accounts transfer" by BMV001::FABRY () Wed Feb 16 1994 14:22

      !!! ??? HELP PLEASE !!! ???

I will be very thankful for help with following problem:

We have to move the ALL-IN-1 ( ver.2.4) accounts from our old
    production system ( mVAX 3100 ) to a new system (VAX 4100)
on which the ALL-IN-1 ver.3.0 is installed.
If moving the accounts one after another, the messages
after the transfer will not be shared. It means, all accounts
will have their private copies of the messages , so a disk space
    problem can occure very likely.
There are about 40 accounts in the old system, with about
1 GB of shared data. We are running Open VMS 5.5-2.
Has anybody an idea how to realize the transfer of accounts
    altogether ???

    THANKS

    Rudolf.
From memory, I don't think there is any option other than to create
individual copies after the transfer, IF you want to do single-user
transfers (resetting all the pointers after the transfer would be
very difficult). The multiple transfer attempts to share them again,
but only amongst the 'pack' of accounts that you transfer over
together. Also, we generally advise that you do you transfers singly,
    as it is more reliable.

    Some thoughts:
. have you thought about upgrading your V2.4 system to V3.0? because
      V3.0 -> V3.0 transfers are more reliable?
. are the 40 accounts the only ones on the new system?; if so, why not
upgrade the old machine to V3.0, and then simply copy your old system
      onto the new machine?
. before you do anything: practice with test accounts, run FCVR on the
      old system, do a backup...
. and get your users to clean out their folders before you start!!
      (good opportunity!)

Discussed this with Caroline Croft who has done thousands of transfers
here in Reading area. She pointed out that the increase in disk usage
might not be as bad as you think, particularly if the users have
actively tried to clean up their accounts. Something like 70% of
messages on some systems are owned by a single user, anyway.

Hope this helps. There's loads of other notes in this file on Transfer
    User.
    Cheers
