3831.0. "move accounts 2.3 - 3.0" by CHUECA::NIEVES () Mon Jan 31 1994 09:23

I have to install ALL-IN-1 3.0 and I have another system with ALL-IN-1 2.3, but
they are not connected so I can't transfer accounts. My customer wants to have
his ALL-IN-1 2.3 accounts in his new 3.0 system.

Can someone tell me, the best way to do it?

Regards,

Nieves

    Hello Nieves.

    Forgive me if I don't understand your setup completely. Are you
    installing V3.0 on a completely different machine, and then you want to
    move some users on to it, leaving the other system at V2.3?

    It would be better if you could bring both machines up to V3.0.

    But, failing that, V2.3 to V3.0 Transfer User should be quite possible,
    using Transfer by Tape. See section 8.5 of the V3.0 Management Guide.
    Let us know if there are problems with this.
    Cheers

Ok, now it seems to be possible, but can you tell me how. What would be the
actions to follow?

    Hi Nieves,

    My action would be to RTFM, the steps are fully documented :-). The
    options can be found in the system manglers sub-system !!

"RTFM" is an acronym for "Please refer to the manual"

The specific manual and section you require was given in reply .1 to this topic:

    Hi Scott,

    >"RTFM" is an acronym for "Please refer to the manual"

    Is that a litral translation from Welsh ? Not that I am trying suggest
    that the Welsh contingent use RTFM quite often (:=====:).

    I always wondered what the "F" in RTFM ment now I know that it's some
    Welsh word for "refer".

    I know all about transfer users using the network or a tape, and of
    course I know the problems that this has, there are lots of stars
    articles and I have very bad experiences doing this, so what I need is
    a way to do this with backup or copy. The problem is the difference
    between the two versions, so I'm thinking about upgrading the 2.3 to
    3.0 and after do a copy to the other system.

    What I want is info from someone that did this before.

    Nieves
3831.8Why didn't you say that before?IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeThu Feb 03 1994 10:3913
    Nieves,

    Well, I think you should not be surprised that we didn't know what
    question you were really asking before....

    If the two versions are different, then the steps are reasonably
    complicated. I don't imagine that anyone will have worked out a better
    way of doing it than we have.

    If you can upgrade the V2.3 system to a later version (especially V3.0)
    before doing the transfer, then it will obviously be easier.

3831.9Go to 3.0 it's a better choiceGIDDAY::SETHIOh what a feeling .....Thu Feb 03 1994 22:4217
    Hi Nieves,

    Going to 3.0 is the best bet for the simple reason the transfer user
    accounts does not touch the users account. What I mean here is that if
    things go wrong than you do not have to worry about trying restore the
    user(s) account. This is very useful if you have many accounts to
    transfer and should the transfer user facility fail you still have your
    user account in tact.

    Pervious versions of ALL-IN-1 were a nightmare when it came to transfer
    user if things went wrong. Our customers have commented on the vast
    improvement in this area, thanks to the IOSG we have had very positive
    feedback.
                                                                  \
