Hi,
I need some help in putting together an outline of tasks for an
ALL-IN-1 upgrade/consolidation effort. The customer has approx 18000
subscribers spread across 48 systems. They want to consolidate the user
community onto 2 OpenVMS AXP clusters. For purposes of our proposal, we
want to outline the steps necessary to move all the users from the
existing 48 systems to the two new clusters. We need to assume that the
48 systems are running a combination of V2.2, V2.3, and V2.4. There are
no systems running V3.0. I do not know what versions of VMS they are
running.
The steps I have come up with to date are very general. I need help
filling in the details. Can someone help me out with things like, "you
need to upgrade to Vx.x of VMS before upgrading to Vx.x of ALL-IN-1.
My steps:
Upgrade all systems to V3.0 of ALL-IN-1 - need more detail here
Upgrade all systems to Vx.x of OpenVMS VAX - need more detail here too
Build the new OpenVMS Alpha AXP systems
Install ALL-IN-1 V3.1 on the new Alpha AXP systems
Use xyz utility to move the user accounts (isn't there an ALL-IN-1
utility to do this - sorry it as been a while)
Questions:
Is there a batch move capability to move up to 2000 user accounts at
one time? That is the max number of subscribers on any one system.
Can the move accounts utility move users from a V3.0 system to a V3.1
system? I am assuming that we must upgrade all the systems to V3.0
prior to moving accounts, is this valid?
This is a real opportunity to get some Alpha AXP systems into this
account. Looking forward to your help!
Regards,
Jeanne

You may want to talk to the ROP people here in OAD in ALF. They have a
migration business that they sell, and probably could put together a
proposal and steps with you.

Jeanne,
Since my previous reply was mysteriously deleted (it's 1984 out there)
here's another attempt at responding... it is of course only my opinion
and i'm sure there's a different version in one of Tony's books. if the
ROp people have a migration plan that covers this then i'm the
President's next Defense Secretary nomination(:==:)
1) get all your systems to ALL-IN-1 V2.4
2) get all your systems to VMS v5.5-2
(I don't believe the order is important)
3) do the merge - don't go to ALL-IN-1 v3.0 it's much more difficult
once you do that - to a small number of VMS machines e.g 2.
4) upgrade to ALL-IN-1 v3.0
5) this is futures stuff so close your eyes at this point
upgrade to v3.1 and then use the top-secret architecture upgrade
option to give you your AXp boxes.
[do not repeat do not try to move 2000 users]
ok?

Andrew,
Since I am located in ALF, would it be possible to meet with you at a
time convenient to you. I'd like to better understand the "top-secret"
part. I will be in the office 1/27 & 1/28.
Thanks,
Jeanne
P.S. who are the ROP people?
