3776.1 | wish noted | IOSG::TYLDESLEY | | Wed Jan 19 1994 13:12 | 12 |
| Hi Sunil.
Your wish is my ....
I just wanted to say that a rewrite of the scheduling mechanism for
hskpg has been on the initial 'requirements' for the past two releases,
but it has always been dropped in favour of more pressing things.
It may well do the same this time.
When FT training is over, Eileen will probably put it on her 'list'!
Cheers

| Hi Sunil,
I sure you don't want the code pinched from the TM subsystem! 8-(
The SRE portion of TM makes more than a few counting errors.

3776.3 | | GIDDAY::SETHI | Oh what a feeling ..... | Wed Jan 19 1994 22:28 | 16 |
| Hi Dave and Dave,
I had forgotten to put this request on the Wish list and only
remembered it yesterday, because of some customer related problem that
was being discussed.
Also at the 4 ALL-IN-1 AS sites I had worked they all said that the
scheduling was restrictive. I remember one of the System Managers for
a Unix system showing me how well Unix scheduled batch jobs.
I feel it would be a good move to change the scheduling, I wonder if
others in the conference could add weight to this wish !!!
Thanks,
Sunil

3776.4 | An offering from Digital | GIDDAY::SETHI | Oh what a feeling ..... | Thu Jan 20 1994 01:23 | 62 |
| Hi All,
Further information that has come to light and I am sure it will be of
interest to all concerned. It appears their is a product called ALL-IN-1
Systidy R 2.0 from DSL in the Sales Update dated the 29th November
1993, vol. 25, that just meets the requirements. Here is what the book
says.

Customer problem
Customers have limited ALL-IN-1 system management functionality for
developing a tailored and flexible maintence schedule to meet the needs
of their ALL-IN-1 environment.
Digital Solution
ALL-IN-1 Systidy provides enhanced and extended ALL-IN-1 system
management functionality by allowing configuration, scheduling,
execution and review of ALL-IN-1 maintence tasks from within the
ALL-IN-1 IOS System Manager's menu environment. In addition to the
standard maintence procedures, Systidy provides several File Cabinet
level routines not available in the base product.
Systidy is driven from a Maintence Database. This database details
what activities are to be performed when and for whom. This machanism
allows for a robust and flexible maintence schedule that can be quickly
and easily tailored to meet the specific needs of any particular
ALL-IN-1 environment. Systidy comes with a standard complement of 24
maintence routines. The product also allows for the creation of new
routines that may then be scheduled and executed with the others. All
routines may be scheduled individually to particular nodes in a
VAXcluster system to make optimal use of available computing resourses.
This provides complete flexibility and capacity for customization and
tailoring by local System Management.
Systidy will send mail messages to a user-defined distribution list
upon the completion of each task indicating success or failure of the
task along with other task-specific information. If Data Center
Monitor (DCM) is available, Systidy will report any fatal errors
encountered to this automation tool.
Systidy also provides menu options for the management of user document
quotas and user UAF process quotas. And for the user's convenience,
Systidy provides the DCL command A1CHECKMAIL which will display the
number of unread messages for the user issuing the command.

Hi
Sorry but the SYSTIDY scheduling will not cater to .0 - you cannot
schedule jobs to run on say the first Saturday of the month. You
can schedule any of the maintenance jobs to run on given days of the
week or on a specified calendar date of the month.

Maybe VMS should allow for real date calculations etc and then we could
all do this kind of stuff.

I wrote something to do real date calculations sometime back (about 6
years ago). It can be done and I used DCL and lexical functions it was
not too difficult and it worked. The company that I worked for than wanted
it written in an easy to understand "language" for maintainability.

3776.8 | DECScheduler ?? | SUBURB::BROWNSTONE | Out to lunch | Fri Feb 04 1994 15:39 | 9 |
| All,
How about utilising DECscheduler.
I know that this'd mean the customer shelling out for another product
(assuming that thsy don't already possess it). But I believe that
offers the scheduling flexability that's required.
