3746.0. "drawer names and invalid characters?" by OPNOFF::BEESTON (Liz Beeston) Mon Jan 10 1994 14:14

   I have a customer who is coverting their file cabinet from another
   envionment, DG CEO, to ALL-IN-1 IOS.

   They are now in the process of automating the file cabinet load and are
   wanting to create IOS drawers with drawer names that include what
   seem to be some unsupported characters. At this stage of developemnt
   they have removed the checking done for the drawer name characters
   in FC_VALID_DRAWER_NAME.

   After checking the script I assume that the five characters strings
   " [ ] ' :: checked for are not supported as they are likely to cause
   problems with other IOS commands and environments. Is this correct?

   Are these the only characters that are not supported in the drawer
    names, for example, dots seems OK.
   Also, why are some of these characters, especially the apostrophe,
   not able to be included in the display name of a drawer.

   	Thanks..Liz

    Liz,

    Yes, from IOS you are not allowed to create drawers containing
    "'[] or ::

    This is due to the way in which IOS constructs the drawer string. For
    example, a remote drawer can look like:

    NODE::"[USER]REMOTE_DRAWER"

    ...this string becomes rather complicated to manipulate if you can
    include drawer names with some of these special characters.

    TeamLinks is a little less strict in this area, and I don't believe
    there are such tight controls over drawer naming convensions. However,
    the TeamLinks client does not have a problem using a drawer with a name
    such as [HELLO]", but from IOS this might well lead to problems.

    It's more a case of different clients handling things in different
    ways. My advice is stay clear from those speical exceptions and you
    should be ok on both platforms.

    Hope this helps,
    Kevin.

    Liz,

    As you'll know from personal experience (note 3228 in Windows_Office)
    TeamLinks created drawers are not very popular with certain bits of
    ALL-IN-1 System Management such as MDK.

    	True, but we have other characters in TeamLinks which cause us
    	problems! :-) In particular \ in drawer names makes TeamLinks ill.
