3451.0. "DECnet file cabinets..?" by NAC030::FERJULIAN () Tue Oct 26 1993 03:14

    I have a user with what could be a decent idea. I am not a 100% A1 user
    so I need an expert users opinion.

    The user wants to be able to do their own archive of their file
    cabinets. Since the user has only a PC I thought what if I could get
    them a "BERNOULI" or similar type of removeable disk for the PC and
    redirect a filecabinet to point to the remote disk. The user then could
    move the files they want to save to the remote disk. This way the user
    could free up valuable VAX space and still be able to go back and
    recover old documents. Is there any way of redirecting using DECnet the
    location of a file-cabinet?

>> Since the user has only a PC

Are they using ALL-IN-1 IOS via a terminal emulator on the PC? Or are they
using Teamlinks?  Or what?

It sounds like PATHworks may be the thing they want.

A simple answer to your question is: yes, if the PC is on DECnet with the VAX,
then they can copy files to the PC. How they do the copy though depends on what
system/tools/applications they are using or want to use.

    It sounds like they want more than the simple ability to copy files, it
    sounds like they want to have the FILECAB.DAT physically located on
    the pc and/or the removable disk?

    If so, I think the answer is no. the filecabinet is based on where
    the users profile says it is, the file that contains all your drawers,
    FILECAB.DAT has to live there. If you can get a setup in which you
    can convince IOS to let you give the a1 directory as teh pc disk, then
    you could do it. I don't think you can do this though.
