3390.0. "TeamLinks and Processes?" by KCOHUB::KCPCXX::SCHELL (Insufficient virtual memory...) Wed Oct 13 1993 18:30

Posted in the TeamLinks conference also. I need some explanation from
some of you good explanators out there:

What is the nature of the connection I make to ALL-IN-1
when I connect to the ALL-IN-1 File Cabinet? What
processes are started? Are there any ALL-IN-1 processes
    that are started?

Does that connection mean a user logs into ALL-IN-1? (Could
he then use a Terminal Emulation package to log into
    ALL-IN-1 a second time?

I have a customer who does chargeback accounting. They
would normally charge a user for the time he's logged into
ALL-IN-1? He's asked me how he does accounting with
    TeamLinks.

I think the answer is no, but if a TeamLinks user has been
"connected" to his ALL-IN-1 File Cabinet for some time, is
there any automatic disconnect after a certain amount of
    time?

    Thanks in advance

    John

3390.1Some sort of explanation from a trainee explanatorIOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeWed Oct 13 1993 19:5624
    John,

Connections are made to the File Cabinet Server (and in the new version
of TeamLinks) to the Aida server, which are continuously running
processes. Within each of them, a "thread" is started for each
connection. Actually it's more complicated than that, but that's as
much as *I* understand... In both cases the connection is disconnected
after it has become idle. The timeout is certainly configurable for the
    FCS.

As you suggest, you can still make Terminal Emulation connections to
    VT style IOS.

We're working on how we are going to licence this when it ships, which
may help address the sort of concerns that you have. Alternatively, you
may need to analyse the FCS logs.

Please let us know if you think this is going to be a serious and
common problem, and how you think we should handle it.

    Graham

PS I don't believe that "explanators", is a real word, which is a
shame, since it is a very good one!!
3390.2Thanks!KCOHUB::KCPCXX::SCHELLInsufficient virtual memory...Thu Oct 14 1993 18:3318
    Graham,

Thanks for the quick response. So far, this customer is the only one
who's asked those kind of questions. By the way, in another place I
was told "get the Manager's Guide for ALL-IN-1, it's all in there. I
couldn't find any reference to TeamLinks. Is there a guide for the
    AIDA server?

Also by the way, words, you know, are merely tools. When my daughter
was young she used to say "shirtles" for "shoulders." There's some
logic in that... I've often wondered why cosmetic manufacturers haven't
lobbied to get the accents changed on certain words; move the accent
over one syllable, and deodorant becomes deoDORant. Sounds much nicer,
    don't you think?

    Thanks again

    John

As Graham said, the ALL-IN-1 connections are done via the FCS and/or
    AIDA.

No processes are started up, both AIDA and FCS run as detached
    processes.

There also is no timeout for direct user connects, system managment
connects timeout as do inter-server connects, but direct connects do
    not.

There is no way to tell how long a user has been connected to the FCS,
I will defer to AIDA people for the same question for aida.

Not so quick response this time..

Maybe they are telling you to look in the Manager's Guide for the TLC,
which will probably explain all the Ada bits. Ro, is this available
    on-line?

For AIDA, go to the Index of Server Clients (SM MAS ISC). Here you
will see a list of all connections currently established to a given
server, together with the initial connection time, and last request
time. (i.e. the time a client first connected, and the last time they
used the server for an operation).

3390.7Identifying OpenVMS processes for TeamLink usersAIMTEC::BRASWELL_ATue May 17 1994 17:2522
I have a customer that uses chargeback accounting for users that
connect to his VAX system. The customer has 6,000+ users. He is
in the process of testing TeamLinks and possibly installing it so
that the PC users can access the IOS file cabinet via TeamLinks.

His concern is that there is no way to determine what users are accessing
his VAX if they connect via TeamLinks. The tracing facility for
the File Cabinet Server or the AIDA is not an acceptable method for
this customer for tracking users that connect to the VAX via TeamLinks.

The reason tracing is not acceptable to this customer is because he
has too many users to check a trace log file for access information.

Are there any other ideas for capturing requests made to connect
to the File Cabinet Server or AIDA server in a log file with the
client connecting from, network address of client, and ALL-IN-1
    username.
