3308.0. "ALL-IN-1 -> X.400 -> MS-MAIL with attachments" by SWAM2::BARNETTE_NE () Tue Sep 21 1993 18:43

    Hello. I need help with the following problem:

    When I send an ALL-IN-1 mail message with an attachment to a
    Microsoft Mail user, the message shows up on the MS-Mail end
    with the attachment as part of the main message. In other
    words somewhere along the line the attachment loses its
    "attachment-ness", and just gets glued to the message
    as though it had never been an attachment at all.

    This happens with just plain ALL-IN-1 messages and attachments
    created with the WPSPLUS or EDT editor.

    We have ALL-IN-1 IOS V2.4, Message Router V3.2 (S3.2-220),
    MRX V2.2G. We send to MS-Mail via a RETIX Open Server.
    (our VAX 6610 is running OpenVMS V5.5-2).

    I have no idea whether the concatenation takes place in
    ALL-IN-1, MRX or on the Retix. I have tried internal support
    but haven't had much luck.

    Any thoughts, help etc would be appreciated. Thanks!

3308.1It's after the OpenserverFORTY2::ASHMail Interchange Group, ReadingWed Sep 22 1993 10:3312
I think there may be another piece of software involved. You problem certainly
won't lie in ALL-IN-1 (which CAN'T do what you suggest) nor MR nor MRX
(ditto). But I believe that you need a gateway between the Openserver and
MS-Mail. If MS-Mail cannot receive multiple-bodypart messages, then that
gateway (most probably a Retix one, but there may be a MS one?) will have to
concatenate them.

It's certainly in the area of Openserver->MS-Mail that you need to look.

There may be more expertise in the MAILbus conf if you need more help.

3308.2Maybe I don't have something set up right...SWAM2::BARNETTE_NEWed Sep 22 1993 16:4318

    There is, as you say, a gateway between the Retix and MS-Mail
    post-offices. The person who manages the Retix/gateway/MS-Mail
    side (who is not exactly a big fan of Digital) says that attachments
    from other mail systems seem to come through just fine, and it is only
    mail from ALL-IN-1 that is a problem.

    This seems to be true as far as I can tell. Is there such a thing as
    an "industry-standard" attachment that my side (ALL-IN-1, MRX et al)
    isn't sending? Are there any MTA settings in MRX that I need to tweak?

    ALL-IN-1 attachments work, of course, when sent to other ALL-IN-1
    systems on the network.

    Thanks,

I'd be surprised if it was just 'mail from ALL-IN-1' that was the problem.
After all, it's actually from MRX, and it's well used to sending to any and
all X.400 implementations. It does sound as if there may be a setup parameter
wrong.

You should be able to get help in the MAILbus conference on Forty2 - both for
MRX and the Retix stuff.
