3307.0. "AUTOFORWARD coming from the "ALLIN1" account." by WARNUT::RICE (Some didn't even realise I'd been away...) Tue Sep 21 1993 12:20

    I'm sure I used to know the answer to this one, but it was a long time
    ago.

    Sending mail from a VMS system to an ALL-IN-1 system, which has AF set to
    point to another VMS system. When the mail arrives at this VMS
    system it appears as though it has come from the managers account on the
    ALL-IN-1 node.

    NODEA -> A1NODE -> NODEB (via Autoforward).

    User on NODEA sends using A1NODE::MRGATE::"A1::USERNAME"

    On A1NODE, the AF address is _NODEB::VMSUSERNAME

    When the mail gets to NODEB it says, From: A1NODE::ALLIN1

    This is not consistent, on other systems the "From:" address is
    correct.

    ALL-IN-1 is v3.0

    I thought it had something to do with the POSTMASTER account, but not
    sure what. The ALL-IN-1 user has MAIDES profile field set to ALL-IN-1
    as he's supposed to. This is driving me mad....

    Steve.

3307.1does this help?ANGLIN::HARRISAhooked on DAVETue Sep 21 1993 17:0110
    had a similar problem with my customer. we changed the AF from the
    format _node::vmsid to the format A1NODE::MRGATE::"A1::USERNAME"

    what was happening to us was that if someone from another system
    REPLIED to a message that
    was sent thru an ALL-IN-1 with AF set to _node::vmsid format then the
    reply would be sent to the ALL-IN-1 manager account VMSmail.

    I Should have tried that in the first place !

    Didn't you mean you changed _node::vmsid to VMSID@NODE@MRGATE  !!!

    :-)
    Steve.
    (If anyone has any other thoughts / explanation I'm still interested)

Steve,

Yes, that's the answer.

The reason is that when the first message is fetched by ALL-IN-1, it'd run in
the Postmaster account. It sees the autoforward address of '_node::name' and
calls special.com which calls MAIL. So the VMS MAIL sender is ALLIN1.

If you use MRGATE (and everyone should do this in all cases!!), then the
usernames are preserved and replies will work. A large past of Digital's MTS
system depends on this!
