3169.0. "U.S. DECUS Wishlist items" by SIOG::T_REDMOND (Thoughts of an Idle Mind) Thu Aug 19 1993 18:23
111 A193B005 We wish Digital provided access and an explanation to all
patches including CSC patches so we can do proactive
system management rather than reactive system management.
98 A193B001 We wish Digital would keep sending their engineers to
DECUS. Their presentations and answers provided in the
campground are very valuable and are what justifies our
attendance at DECUS.
83 A193B002 We wish Digital engineers would assist in answering user
questions on Compuserve, DECUServe, etc. (similar to
Pathworks on Compuserve).
66 A193A019 We wish the File Cabinet had options to assist users in
document/message cleanup, for example:
- an Index that shows the first few lines of the text
- an Index that shows how large the document is (in
blocks), or even better yet, allowing users to index on
documents that are a certain # of blocks or larger.
59 A193A012 We wish that when using Find on a field (like folder:) we
could use the Index interface to choose which would then
allow going back and forth, instead of having to press
RETURN to go through items and having to do GOLD Find
again to choose an item at the top of the list.
46 A193B008 We wish for documentation on ALL-IN-1 Group Conferencing
from a system managers point of view.
44.5 A193A014 We wish that there was a Confirmation prompt to ask if
the user is sure they want to Send when using the Send
option for anything other than those in the CREATED
folder.
39.5 A193A004 We wish that V3.0 would come with user documentation
equal to the number of users licensed or come with
permission to copy enough for licensed users.
35 A193B009 We wish that when printing ASCII documents to a queued or
ported printer, you could press GOLD A to change the
horizontal and vertical pitch.
32 A193A015 We wish that Digital would get rid of the diamond in the
80th Column which was supposed to be gone awhile ago.
26 A193B004 We wish that SRA asset package (access databases like RDB
and DB2 with ALL-IN-1 entry form capability) was part of
the base ALL-IN-1 product.
18 A193A006 We wish that CDA provided a nice document conversion from
ALL-IN-1 right on the host.
17 A193A009 We wish that the Network Scheduler would tie into
ALL-IN-1 Time Management.
15.25 A193B006 We wish Digital was familiar with their competition, so
when we indicate that their competitor can do ..., they
don't look at us with blank stares.
13 A193A002 We wish that Digital would update the ASSET packages soon
after an ALL-IN-1 upgrade is out (for example, mail
janitor and resource scheduler).
9.25 A193A018 We wish that in Personal Directories, we could edit a
name without having to delete the entry and recreate it.
9 A193A016 We wish that on a form we could have a scrollable region
with word wrapping.
8 A193A011 We wish that Spellcheck would function without invoking
WPS-PLUS. (Spell checking ASCII documents should not
invoke WPS-PLUS)
6 A193A008 We wish that users could be more involved in the
prioritization process of Digital's consideration of
WISHLIST items.
5 A193A007 We wish that we could use a DOS path name to identify
documents for transfer to and from ALL-IN-1 and Pathworks
when the document is stored in the user's home directory
(m:drive).
2 A193B003 We wish that there was an edit drawer access option in
background mode.
0 A193A001 We wish that EARS had a migration path to TeamRoute.
0 A193A005 We wish that scrolling regions could be a portion of the
screen - not necessarily the whole screen.
0 A193A010 We wish that Desktop for DOS could have a default
subdirectory for document storage instead of the C drive
root level.
0 A193A013 We wish that we could do GOLD L in SMD (DDS) on all the
fields.
0 A193A017 We wish that in Personal Directories, we could search on
the company - not the phone number.
0 A193B007 We wish that the Index of Summary in Group Conferencing
would be accurate when you issue Index of Conferences
without going into the conference.
83.25 WP93A026 We wish that in WPS-PLUS, there was an easy way to create
fill-in forms. Now, we need to type in > and ADVANCE to
it, then delete it so it doesn't print. Perhaps make it
not print out.
67 WP93B023 We wish that WPL files did not take up so much disk
space. They do not appear to reclaim space from deleted
files.
55 WP93B018 We wish the WPS-PLUS multicolumn editor supported snaking
columns.
52.25 WP93B022 We wish that WPS-PLUS grammar checker was more accurate
and usable; it misses punctuation, doesn't use the
personal dictionary, and makes incorrect decisions.
Needs more functionality.
49 WP93B011 We wish WPS-PLUS indicated which line you are on when
editing columns in the multicolumn editor.
49 WP93B012 We wish WPS-PLUS would use reverse video rather than a
diamond when selecting text.
46 WP93B008 We wish WPS-PLUS had a symbol indicating the total number
of pages in a document.
42 WP93B014 We wish there was a save and save as command to save the
whole document rather than having to select the whole
document first and use GOLD W.
39 SM93A038 We wish that List Processing Specification document would
not be required (but leave as optional). By default,
process all records then the user wouldn't need to select
them via Document Processing option.
38 WP93B013 We wish you could print from within a WPS-PLUS document.
38 WP93A024 We wish that in TDE we could change a ruler and have it
remain in the document.
38 WP93B029 We wish WPS-PLUS had pull down menus for all GOLD key
functions for PC users since all PC keyboards don't have
the full keyboards.
37.25 WP93B024 We wish for a UDP command to pause the screen and prompt
for user input.
35 WP93A021 We wish that WPS-PLUS had a non-breaking carriage return
(like the non-breaking space) so that paragraphs and
sections could be together on the same page.
33 WP93B016 We wish you could use the TAB key in the WPS-PLUS ruler
to jump to the next tab setting. (Sweden version)
30 WP93A022 We wish that WPS-PLUS handled broadcast messages better;
for example, indicate a message is waiting, then let the
user press a key sequence to bring up the message on
screen.
28 WP93B007 We wish you could autogenerate a Table of Contents in
WPS-PLUS and place it in the WPS-PLUS where you want it
to print in the document.
27 WP93B017 We wish WPS-PLUS displayed soft page breaks automatically
to show users where current text lines break rather than
having to paginate a document.
23.75 WP93B025 We wish WPS-PLUS had a feature like TPU that allows you
to DEFINE KEYS for WPS-PLUS commands. For example, I may
wish to define MENU to KEYPAD 5. The user wants to be
able to define all keys, not just F17-F20 and GOLD
F17-GOLD F20.
23.5 WP93B019 We wish the WPS-PLUS multicolumn editor supported page
breaks, non-breaking paragraph blocks, etc.
22 WP93B001 We wish WPS-PLUS had the ability to convert Microsoft
Word tables into WPS-PLUS.
21 WP93B020 We wish that the GOLD TABPOS PARA, to align paragraphs in
the multicolumn editor, would align the alignment markers
while editing even if there were rulers in a column.
16 WP93B005 We wish F17-F20 and GOLD F17-GOLD F20 could be used as
system wide UDPs in WPS-PLUS.
14.25 WP93B004 We wish WPS-PLUS had the ability to turn off control
blocks in edit mode. Use GOLD V or another key to see
control blocks.
14 WP93B003 We wish the GOLD PF3 (UNDELETE CHAR) and GOLD PF4
(UNDELETE WORD) in WPS-PLUS would save several characters
instead of just the last one. For example, save the last
3 characters deleted.
13 WP93A025 We wish that Spellcheck would look at the personal
dictionary and suggest replacement words.
12.25 WP93B010 We wish the TOP and BOTTOM control block commands would
allow you to specify which page to start putting the
header or footer on. (for example: TOP \p 5 -- put this
header starting on page 5)
10 WP93B021 We wish for the ability to store a different chapter in a
separate document and then use a menu option to pull all
of the documents together when printing paragraph
numbering, Table of Contents, and Index.
7 WP93A023 We wish that we could Spellcheck in the subject/title
field.
7 WP93B006 We wish there was a parameter to let WPS-PLUS know to use
32 or 48 lines on an Xterminal when editing, but continue
to use 24 lines on the ALL-IN-1 menus.
5 WP93B027 We wish we could add tables into WPS-PLUS or use a
tabular function.
5 WP93B009 We wish you could edit control blocks in WPS-PLUS like
you edit footnotes with a separate edit screen.
5 WP93B015 We wish GOLD W in WPS-PLUS would display a menu prompting
to write the whole document, the rest of the document,
etc.
3 WP93B002 We wish DEL CHAR and DEL WORD in WPS-PLUS had separate
buffers.
2 WP93B028 We wish we could use a mouse on a PC with WPS-PLUS,
similar to the way the TPU editor moves the cursor and
selects.
302.5 SM93B017 We wish that the ALL-IN-1 base product included a
housekeeping routine to delete users mail that is older
than a given date. We'd like to have the mail deleted in
READ, OUTBOX, etc. folders or ALL folder. We'd also like
a second housekeeping routine which would send an EM to
the users listing which mail messages would be deleted
and when.
264 SM93B009 We wish ALL-IN-1 would support all RMS file types and RMS
datatypes listed in the CDD, including positive and
negative numbers, so we can display, report, and change
these values.
188.5 SM93B022 We wish that when deleting a user, ALL-IN-1 would remove
the user from distribution lists, nicknames, calendars,
etc.
179.5 SM93A034 We wish that when renaming and deleting accounts, the
system distribution list entries would be deleted or
renamed.
166.5 SM93A037 We wish that Digital would include more/better
documentation for supporting Printing. For example, in
Printer Tables, what do all of the fields mean, what
happens when you change it, and what relation do the
fields have to each.
134.5 SM93B011 We wish that mail with one pointer would be moved into
the users private account. (Create a housekeeping
routine which could be run on select disks or accounts to
unshare mail messages with one pointer and move them to
the users private account)
128 SM93A027 We wish that Housekeeping procedures could be split up
and be run in a cluster on separate nodes all at the same
time, especially RSF.
98.5 SM93B006 We wish for a way to restore documents into ALL-IN-1
especially mail messages. (Example: We should be able
to restore a DOCDB.DAT, select documents in an index to
be restored and the system would check the shared and
mail areas and setup pointers)
71 SM93B007 We wish for a housekeeping procedure to restore archive
documents from tape.
68 SM93A036 We wish that housekeeping would cleanup events and tasks.
(TM93A050 We wish that TM92B37 be resubmitted because TM
needs a way to purge old meeting events. TM93B003 We wish
for a verify and repair Time Mgmt subsystem to cleanup
old meetings.)
68 SM93B016 We wish for better documentation on the internals of
ALL-IN-1 and how we can touch it.
51 SM93B010 We wish that ALL-IN-1 would support as an attribute on
the CAB$DSAB the reference count for the document in
question (read only access is fine).
49 SM93B002 We wish that ALL-IN-1 archiving put the ALL-IN-1 archived
header information into a separate ARCHIVE_DOCDB.DAT file
rather than cross filing it into the users DOCDB.DAT.
49 SM93B003 We wish Reorganizing User's ALL-IN-1 Accounts (ROA) and
Reorganize System files (RSF) were combined into one
housekeeping job and we could select which system files
to reorganize. This way we can select which files to be
converted each night.
47 SM93B014 We wish for the ability to set break points in the script
debugger.
45 SM93B001 We wish that whenever Digital changed the format of a
file (like profile) they would include the Datatrieve
record definition with the ALL-IN-1 kit.
40 SM93A041 We wish that Application programming have a truly phantom
DSAB, not having to create a file.
38 SM93B018 We wish you could add carbon copies in a distribution
list.
37 SM93B019 We wish there was one more level in CM so users could
test applications in CM before moving them into
production.
35.5 SM93A031 We wish that in CXP, the options would support modems
that are actually sold.
27 SM93A028 We wish that System Distribution Lists and Groups were
the same instead of requiring two different entries.
25 SM93B005 We wish that when processing special mail destinations,
it would look for scripts before command procedures to
avoid the subprocess.
19 SM93A030 We wish that on index forms, default options could reside
in default and not in a separate form.
18 SM93B021 We wish a housekeeping procedure checked RMS file
structures and directories for tuning purposes, for
example giving notification of when RSD needs to run to
balance shared areas.
16 SM93B012 We wish you could call an ARG form with
/EXCLUDE=field,field.
15 SM93B004 We wish you could have subroutines within DO scripts
rather than have to call other DO scripts.
10 SM93A033 We wish that patches would be split up into separate
fixes.
10 SM93A035 We wish to resubmit SM92B56 to have the File Cabinet
asset be part of the base product which lists the amount
of disk space used by each user for both documents and
shared messages.
10 SM93A040 We wish that we could have an "excludes" qualifiers on
forms statements.
10 SM93B013 We wish that the RSF Housekeeping option had separate
FDL's for each of the system daf files.
7.5 SM93A039 We wish that Administrator function should be split up
into separate groups, such as a separate administrator
for account management, housekeeping, distribution lists,
groups, printers. Each of these administrators should
not have access to the others.
7 SM93A029 We wish that GOLD % form from tracing function provided
better help and instructions for programmers, and gave a
clue for GOLD A and GOLD B.
5 SM93B015 We wish to have comma formatting put into dollar values
similar to ::Z and ::H.
5 SM93B020 We wish that ALL-IN-1 included the ability to manage
users on a cluster who work in multiple time zones.
1 SM93A032 We wish that the current printer default could be
different in each subsystem; for example, a different
printer selected for EM versus TM.
0 SM93B008 We wish you could pass a keyword on the /POINTER
qualifier in an index form as a variable and the variable
would be re-evaluated and the behavior automatically
changed with a scroll update so you can change the
pointer view attribute on the fly.
120.5 TL93B010 We wish that a resource scheduler was integrated as part
of the time management base package.
91 TM93A057 We wish that in TM Events there could be an easy way to
Edit or Delete recurring events.
89 TM93A058 We wish that TM, SRE could have an option so that all
workdays, except one, be scheduled and could have an
option that scheduled events on Monday, Wednesday, Friday
for X weeks.
79 TM93B002 We wish that mail message notify, on the event that has
been edited, would be sent to the entire original
recipient list. (In V3, if only goes to people who
answered yes)
74 TM93A042 We wish that there were some Time Management
enhancements, like alarms for events notification,
conference room scheduling, remote set owner, etc.
39 TM93A043 We wish that when creating events, we could enter a
location even if there are no attendees.
25 TM93A054 We wish that when a change is made to a meeting event,
the notices indicate what was changed in the event, such
as the meeting room.
22 TM93A056 We wish that in TM Events we could add comments to
deleted or edited events.
20 TM93A047 We wish that we had an option to forward meeting notices
to another user, like to an administrative support
person.
12 TM93A053 We wish that we could exclude weekends in TM when using
schedule recurring events.
12 TM93A044 We wish that in TM Tasks we could Index on close dates so
we could produce status reports with start and end dates.
10 TM93A048 We wish that in TM the Scan feature would list only free
time, then allow the user to change the criteria and
re-scan.
8 TM93A049 We wish that Digital calendar products be truly client
server technology instead of just LAN based technology.
7 TM93A059 We wish that in TM or in Teamlinks Scheduler, we could
have an electronic IN and OUT board for staff use.
4 TM93A045 We wish that TM SRE could have exceptions in the series.
4 TM93A051 We wish that when responding to events, that the answer
field would be blank instead of the default Y.
2 TM93A046 We wish that scheduled meetings with multiple addressees
could have the ability to turn off sending mail message
responses back to the scheduler.
2 TM93A055 We wish that in TM Events we could Index on the purpose
field.
1 TM93B001 We wish you could use multiple delete events in TM, not
just delete 50 events at a time.
0 TM93A052 We wish that TM would have conflict analysis for more
than one day.
208 EM93B007 We wish mail customization for suppressing long
distribution lists when reading and printing mail would
be included with the ALL-IN-1 base product.
207.5 EM93A064 We wish that sender could set expiration dates on mail
messages, so the message would automatically be deleted
on that date from any addressee's INBOX.
119 EM93A066 We wish that EM Read function would read documents with
all the proper Word Perfect formatting; for example,
leaving the Word Perfect table not scrambled.
88.5 EM93A060 We wish that there was Sorting capability for personal
and system distribution lists. The user should be
prompted whether they want the list sorted since not all
lists should be sorted.
73 EM93A071 We wish that we could insert a name in the middle of a
distribution list.
54 EM93A070 We wish that there was a way to tighten up the
possibility of users answering mail to all addressees
when they really should answer only to the sender. For
example, this requestor made a customization so that if
there are over 10 users, it will put up a confirmation
prompt "Do you really want to answer to all 70 addressees
[Y/N]:".
53 EM93A065 We wish that FM (file message) could have a flag set so
we could charge the disk space to the user area instead
of the shared area.
50 EM93B004 We wish that a copy of an autoforward message be kept in
the recipients INBOX.
50 EM93B005 We wish that Message Router would be fully supported on
AXP/VMS and not remotely supported.
40 EM93B003 We wish that ALL-IN-1 Personal Assistant was part of the
ALL-IN-1 base product since other office products include
this similar functionality.
40 EM93B009 We wish Group/Department Distribution lists which can be
maintained by authorized users in the group who may not
be Administrators.
37 EM93A067 We wish for an index field to search for an addressee on
an EM.
31 EM93A069 We wish that electronic mail dates would be less
confusing; for example, you could change the "Date:" in
the electronic mail header to say "Delivered:" and
display the delivered date (when it becomes 1 new mail
message). In IO, IR, II, we would like the "Delivered:"
date to display instead of displaying "Date Receive:"
which shows the modified date.
31 EM93B001 We wish that while reading a mail message in EM or WP,
you could print a select range of pages or select pages
of attachments.
23 EM93A063 We wish that the Sender and Fetch would talk to Mailbus
X.400.
13 EM93B006 We wish the Read option in EM would process control
blocks.
13 EM93B010 We wish EM Read function would format a document as does
WP read.
9 EM93B008 We wish that when sending an EM with read receipt, a flag
for indicating whether just TO: recipients or both TO and
CC should return read receipts.
5 EM93A062 We wish that Mailworks and ALL-IN-1 would use the same
file cabinet.
3 EM93B002 We wish that EM would allow longer TO: fields for X.400
addresses.
2 EM93A061 We wish that the address field in the NETWORK.DAT file
was longer.
1 EM93A068 We wish that sender and fetcher were multi-threaded.
194 TL93B001 We wish Teamlinks provided a true mail bagging capability
in Teamlinks so users mail could be transferred from
ALL-IN-1 at a scheduled time to their PC allowing the
users to read and create all messages on their PC.
65 TL93B005 We wish that the basic mail editor in Teamlinks would
include "basic" functionality such as bold, underline,
etc.
52 TL93B003 We wish in Teamlinks, that when a client extracted a file
out of a file cabinet, the file would be converted to the
application being called from. (Example: If your
opening a WPS-PLUS file from Wordperfect, the document
would be converted to Wordperfect)
40 TL93B008 We wish Teamlinks mail had a boilerplate so you can make
it look like mail from ALL-IN-1 IOS.
20 A193A003 We wish that Teamlinks ran on TCP/IP without requiring
Pathworks.
12 A193A020 We wish that Teamlinks components could be packaged
separately and make licensing cheaper.
10 TL93B004 We wish Teamlinks would support all RMS file types and
RMS datatypes listed in the CDD, including positive and
negative numbers, so we can display, report, and change
these values.
10 TL93B007 We wish that future Teamlinks releases to have custom
controls for index scroll regions.
8 TL93B002 We wish for a way to restore documents into Teamlinks
especially mail messages. (Example: We should be able
to restore a DOCDB.DAT, select documents in an index to
be restored and the system would check the shared and
mail areas and setup pointers)
5 TL93B006 We wish that in additional to the Teamlinks client and
MAC client, there was an Xwindows client and a true VT100
client. (We don't want ALL-IN-1 Services for DECwindows)
0 TL93B009 We wish that Teamlinks for DOS and MAC were closer and
included the same functionality.

3169.3 | Australian DECUS, customers like GUI's and client/servers | GIDDAY::SETHI | Ahhhh (-: an upside down smile from OZ | Tue Aug 31 1993 04:47 | 71 |
| Hi All,
I attented the Australian DECUS and to be quite honest I spent a great
deal of time on the CSC stand and did a presentation on DEC MAILworks.
I attended the ALL-IN-1 seminars and other OA related ones.
The customers are very keen on the client server technologies and in
particular Office Automation systems and Electronic Mail. Those
customer who have not installed EM and OA systems but used OpenVMS mail
are going for DMW's and other client/server solutions.
ALL-IN-1 customers are keen to stay with the product and have expressed
a big interest in RoadRunner. They would like to have the ability to
use their server based applications via an incon on a PC/Macintosh GUI.
I was most suprised to hear that they are willing to wait and will
allow their users to have a terminal emulation session on another
window to access the ALL-IN-1 IOS applications. They are keen to see
their users moving away from the character cell based technology and
would like a GUI interface. Not only that but the ability to customise
and have a means to manage the customsations.
ALL-IN-1 IOS customers are reluctant to move to DMW's in some cases as
they feel they are losing the rich varity of management tools. They do
not like the idea of using the command line interface that is provided
by DMW's for X4MAN. Not only that but the housekeeping utilities are
invaluble and are tried and trusted. For the time being and perhaps
the longer term we will not see ALL-IN-1 IOS die a sudden death !!!
RoadRunner is giving a new life to ALL-IN-1 IOS and the customers seem
to be happy that Digital is preserving their investment. To say that
ALL-IN-1 IOS is old hat is to say "The king is dead long live
the King" !!! ALL-IN-1 IOS is far from finnished and there is life in
the old lady yet ;-).
It was also annouched that ALL-IN-1 IOS will become X400 conformant and
MAILbus 400 support maybe available in a PFR. This pleased the
customers no end and the customers like the idea of Open Systems,
Digital are seen as leaders in Open Systems. Customers also expressed
an interest in the Alpha boxes and ALL-IN-1 IOS availability. Digital
can look forward to a large number of sales of our Alpha boxes to
ALL-IN-1 IOS customers.
An observation I made was that within Digital we are treating ALL-IN-1
IOS as old hat. I feel that this is a mistake as we are exposing
ourselves to losing customers if we don't show a positive commitment.
By this I mean when customers go through a selection process they will
look at third party solutions we could lose out if the customers feel
that ALL-IN-1 IOS is old hat.
To summarise client/server technologies and EM systems are the areas
that are showing a potential for growth. Alpha is the one thing that
will lift Digital to new hights and existing customers are not going to
just drop ALL-IN-1 IOS. We on our part must show a commitment towards
ALL-IN-1 IOS and provide a means to run existing applications via a
GUI. Windows and PC as front ends (user interface) are being
increasingly important to customers.
As one customer who happens to be our largest OA customer said "Users
who have migrated to a GUI environment do not want to go back to their
VT clients". GUI's customers feel have provided them with productivity
gains the users like them.
These are just my observations and opinions no doubt some of you will
express yours.
Tony sorry to have "stolen" your topic I just thought it would be good
to add this as we are discussing DECUS and customers.

3169.4 | The GUI front-end dream is nearly here | SIOG::T_REDMOND | Thoughts of an Idle Mind | Tue Aug 31 1993 11:38 | 21 |
| FWIW, with TeamLinks V2.0 and the TLC V2.0 you'll be able to migrate
applications to a GUI front-end. This statement is general rather than
specific because there are some gotchas, but most ALL-IN-1 applications
that are based on entry forms are moveable.
I have a sample program written using AIDA/Visual Basic that migrates
the Personal Phone Directory (that well-loved PHPENT entry form) to
Windows. The problems are the amount of time it takes to migrate an
application and the learning curve for IOS programmers. These will be
overcome in time.
On the Mac it's a slightly different story. Unlike TeamLinks for
Windows, the Mac version doesn't come fully equipped with DLLs, VBXs,
and DDE. Instead the Mac applications are a collection of separate
utilities that freely co-operate with each other, and the only API
component that's likely in TeamLinks is some OCE work in TeamLinks
V2.0. Whether or not IOS applications will be as easy to migrate to a
Mac front end is an interesting question, one that I'm not going to
attempt to answer here.

3169.5 | Recommendations to update skills set's please ? | GIDDAY::SETHI | Ahhhh (-: an upside down smile from OZ | Thu Sep 02 1993 01:19 | 17 |
| Hi Tony,
As we move towards the client/server environment it looks like we all
need to update our skills set. Are there any books, presentations,
recommendations etc. that can be made to help us all ?
We are in for some exciting times ahead and all the gloom and doom
surounding ALL-IN-1 IOS (Classic) or ALL-IN-1 IOSS (Integrated Office
Systems Server) will more than likely be put to rest once and for all.
I hope ALL-IN-1'er will have a smile on their face now as the product
is mature and continuely evolving. It's far from dead and people in
this conference should sing it's praises and put the rumours to rest.

Sunil
