3164.0. "SMU with DNS / Partition error" by KERNEL::OTHENJ () Wed Aug 18 1993 15:30

ALL-IN-1 v3.0

Customer has the following problem when using SMU. They SMU to another
colleague, and create a mail message. When they create the header, the
error message

Message has not been created

is displayed.

GOLD W produces

Partition not found
Dns and file cabinet server partition master file not synchronised

They have DECdns started on their system, but they only use it
for node lookups. Customer is using DECnet phase IV with extensions. I
looked at the server entry for each node in cluster, each of them had
Distribution=OFF with a name of NODE::"73=". They have the following
installed images on their system

dns$share /open/shared/prot/lnkbl
dns$rtl /open/shared/lnkbl

Users have only recently started trying this, so the customer does not know
if this ever worked.

These users do not have any problems accessing/cross-filing their
documents, so their entries in partition.dat seem o.k.

The customer has also found that this problem does not occur on every
account

e.g.

1) From own account, SMU to another colleague and could create mail. This
colleague did not have a file called mail_access.dat though.

2) From own account, SMU to a different colleague and could not create
mail. This did have a file mail_access.dat with an acl for his own account.

Any ideas?

	Thanks,
		Julie

    Hi,

    I have also checked partition_master.dat and the file is totally empty
    as it should be, so I am totally stumped. Could anyone help me out on
    this?

    	Thanks,
    		Julie
3164.2Do you have DSO installedCHRLIE::HUSTONFri Aug 20 1993 19:2110

    I have seen this error before, check the sys$cluster_node
    logical on your cluster (assuming it is a cluster). The FCS
    assumes it contains a '::' on the end of it.

    Also, turn on FCS tracing and do the SMU again, that should tell what
    node the FCS thinks it is trying to connect to.

Hi,

The customer has checked sys$cluster_node and found that the :: was missing
from the logical, so he changed the logical , but now finds that 2 out of
three nodes works, the other does not.

Below is the output of the trace when SMU is run, can anyone make any sense
out of this ??

3164.4Still looks messed upCHRLIE::HUSTONTue Aug 31 1993 16:4714

    this really looks like the FCS is brokering back to itself. You say
    that you fixed the node logical, did you re-start the FCS after doing
    this?

    The error you are getting back is indicating that someone brokered
    into this node, but this node does not serve the parttion being
    requested. THe partition should be listed in the remote conn start
    section, but it isn't. This leads me to believe the node logical
    is still messed up. The FCS needs to be re-started after fixing the
    logical. the FCS reads it at startup time.
