2995.0. "EDT users only get Error detected from editor" by COMICS::BARHAM (Norbert:) Mon Jul 12 1993 15:47

ALL-IN-1 2.4, WPS-PLUS 3.1

My customer suddenly finds that all EDT users get an error similar to
the following when trying to save documents :-

%oa-w-edtfailure error detected from editor
-system-f-mcheck detected hardware error, PC=00578a19 PSL=03C00000
%oa-w-edtfailure error detected from editor
-noname-w-nomsg message number 0058c600

They are then thrown out of ALL-IN-1. Further attempts sometimes give

%DPE-F-REENTRY, Attempt to re-enter EDT

and again throws them out.

They are not aware of anything that changed over the weekend and the
hardware engineer believes it is not a hardware problem (though I don't
know what he checked).
Editing using EDT from VMS is fine.

This is a VAXStation 3100. ALL-IN-1 and all the users are on the system
disk which has no errors on it. There are 88000 free blocks and no disquota
enabled.

Old STARS article blames diskquota but this can't be.

What else can I check (assuming it might actually be a software
problem?!)

Thanks,

Clive

Hi Clive,

If you think that the problem lies at the RMS level do the following:-

$analyze/disk/norepair <disk>

Than post the results here or look in the Stars database but do let us
know what happned.

Regards,

2995.2Sounds like a pretty wild error?!IOSG::CHINNICKgone walkaboutTue Jul 13 1993 13:3012

Clive,

The only other suggestion is that DPESHR may have been corrupted
somehow. You could try getting another copy of it from another V2.4
node and putting it up and INSTALL/REPLACE'ing it to see if that does
any good? Or try re-linking ALL-IN-1 just in case it's that which is
messing things up.

Other than that - no ideas for the present.

Paul.
2995.3DPESHR <> EDT from DCL!IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeTue Jul 13 1993 14:2711
Agree with Paul in .-1, it's probably DPESHR that's duff. Try
ANAL/IMAGE that. Note that this shareable image provided the EDT-like
functionality in ALL-IN-1, so your test of EDT at the DCL level didn't
really tell you much.

You might possibly also try relinking the main image.

Also, you could try doing a SET WATCH FILEs to see what's being
accessed when the error occurs.

Graham
2995.4If you wish to use DCL level for testing...IOSG::MARCHANTI'd sink therefore I swamTue Jul 13 1993 15:195
A `$DEFINE EDTSHR DPESHR' will enable you to use EDT but using the
DPESHR image instead.

Cheers,
Paul.

Thanks chaps.

The file SYS$LIBRARY:DPESHR had no RMS errors so I REMOVEd and re-ADDed
the image using INSTALL and all was well.

Thanks again.

Clive
(p.s. This was not apparently obvious from a SET WATCH FILE/CLASS=ALL)

Clive,

<<<< (p.s. This was not apparently obvious from a SET WATCH FILE/CLASS=ALL)

Um, perhaps it doesn't log accesses via the image activator to file
which are installed as KNOWN images. Paul C?

Graham
2995.7/OPEN images don't show I'd expectIOSG::CHINNICKgone walkaboutThu Jul 15 1993 17:065

If the file is INSTALLed /OPEN then the file is already open and the
XQP doesn't get called to re-open it. Hence, it wont show up.

Paul.
