2941.1 | Probably not doing the same things | IOSG::CHINNICK | gone walkabout | Wed Jun 30 1993 14:46 | 15 |
| Well, this is not the notes file for futures and we can't comment here!
Having said that, it would help a lot to understand the problem if you
could be a bit more specific as to what operations are slow?
It also might help to understand how the system is set up. It's quite
possible that you are measuring the performance through the File
Cabinet Server or even FAL access to documents in shared drawers.
Finally, there are a lot more things going on in V3 of ALL-IN-1 and a
lot more code present to do those things. It needs more memory and
other resources so if you aren't allowing for this everything is going
to slow down.

2941.2 | Good ideas in the manual to help you tune ALL-IN-1 | SNOFS1::SETHI | Sunil Sethi | Thu Jul 01 1993 01:42 | 22 |
| Hi Allan,
Have you tuned the FCS as per the manual ? See pages 15-4 onwards in
the System Managers guide or better still there is a whole chapter
called Optimizing Performance 15-1. Followed by Chapter 19.
To say ALL-IN-1 IOS is executing slower really gives us very little to
work on. On a number of sites we have had problems reported that
turned out to be that the customer had not followed the guide lines in
the manual. If the guide lines are followed you can expect some
improvment but don't expect ALL-IN-1 IOS to fly, you have to wait for
the Alpha version ;-). By the way our large customer sites have not
really complained about performance issues such that they have become
an important issue. Most sites have followed the recommendations.
To sum it all up my suggestion would be to read the above chapters and
do some monitoring before and after the tuning exercise. Shall I make
a sweeping statement ? Such as it needs alot more memory than before %^).
That's my 2c worth I hope it helps,
Sunil

| G'day Sunil,
As you suggest: Documentation is always a good starting point.
Of course, failing that...
You could always look at it as a revenue opportunity. There is a huge
market in services for tuning systems like ALL-IN-1 and very little
knowledge on how to do so.
For a small fee... [but slightly more than 2] I might even be enticed
back to my native Oz! ;-)

| Hi Paul,
Do we have a conference that discusses tuning issues apart from the
OpenVMS tuning conference, it is a good conference VMSDEV::VMSTUNING.
However having one for ALL-IN-1 IOS would be great as there are a large
number of sites that only have ALL-IN-1 IOS installed on their system
or it's the main application.
I must admit that tuning is not really my strong point. Having access
to more information would be helpful, so any pointers to more
information would be invaluable.
Regards,
Sunil
