2904.0. "No remote mail until reboot ..." by TAV02::CHAIM (Semper ubi Sub ubi .....) Wed Jun 23 1993 10:20

A customer added a new node in a network. This new node runs A1 and Message
Router Transfer services.

Initially she was having problems sending remote mail (in a loopback on this
same node) and we realized that the MR mailbox passwrod was not correct. So she
used MM CMP to correct this. After doing this sho could send remote mail via a
loopback.

After this she attempted sending remote mail offnode to one of her other A1s
running in the network. She sent several mails and then ran the sender. The
sender detected that it had mail on the queue to send, but it didn't send the
mail, nor did it indicate any error. She tried sending EXPRESS. A1 did not
indicate that any error occurred, but the mail was NOT sent and remained on the
queue.

After she rebooted this new node, the mail was sent.

Anyone have an explanation for this behavior?

Thanks,

Cb.

It sounds as if A1V3START had not been run successfully on the new node - was
the sender running on the new node?

Incidentally, it has always been the policy that if a Send of EXPRESS mail
fails, that the message is put on the queue without telling the sending user.
The user will only be informed if the usual 10 failures take place
subsequently.

Sorry for not mentioning in the main note that she's running V2.4

Yes.

Does this apply to the sender running in batch as well? The sender does run and
does state explicitly that it detects that there are mail messages on the queue
to be sent, but it never actually sends them. I would have expected some sort
of an error logged in one of the log files.

Well, the diagnosis is the same - was A1V24START run successfully on the new
node before the sender was asked to run on that node?

If the ALL-IN-1 environment (logicals, installed sections etc.) has not been
created (by the A1*.com) then whern the sender runs, the DCL will detect
messages in the queue, but the ALL-IN-1 image will fail to initialise
correctly - so you won't get any errors logged either.

Have you still got the OAMTISEND.LOG? What happens after the call to ALLIN1
and the attempt to MAIL MTI_SEND_ALL ?

Hi g,

Supposedly YES, however we know better than to implicitly trust what a customer
tells us.

Unfortunately NO.

Unless the behavior reoccurs, we'll have to forego the post mortem.
