2881.0. "Migrating users to Group Services" by MIMS::MORABITO_P () Thu Jun 17 1993 23:49

Environment:

	VAX/VMS - 5.5-2
	ALL-IN-1 IOS - 3.0

I have a customer that is using ALL-IN-1 3.0 and has discovered that shared
drawers are using a lot of ACLs and causing a degradation in performance.
Most drawers have many users that have access to them. Group Services seems
like it would solve this problem. My question is, how can she change from
individual identifiers to group identifiers for drawer access? Is there an
easier way to do this other than taking off the ACLs, creating a group, and
then readding the group ACL to the each drawer file cabinet? The customer has
SFCP migated drawers and she would like to put them into groups as well. Is
there anyway to make SFCP drawers go into group services during the upgrade?

I am sure I am not the only that has come accross this issue. Any ideas
would be appreciated.

Paul

    Paul,

    I do not know of anything *written* to do this. Use VMS SEARCH
    on oa$lib:*.com and oa$lib:*.scp for "ACL ", this will give you
    some examples, ideas from both the VMS and ALL-IN-1 Levels.

    Also, the named data, etc.. for group and oa$lib:sfcp_convert_acl.scp
    might be a good starting point.

2881.2Tool for solving the problemCOPCLU::VAGNVagn Eisensee @DMOTue Jun 22 1993 15:0145
      I have made a tool called Shared Drawer System Administration, which
      does exactly what you are asking for in .0

      When a new shared drawer is created, ALL-IN-1 also creates 4 groups
      which are added as users of the shared drawer. Each group corresponds
      to a certain access level to the shared drawer, and when ading users
      you just add the user as member of one of the groups. In this way you
      keep the number of ACL's down to a minimum of 4.

      The system also adds a record to the users FILECAB, so that the user
      does not have to do any administration himself.

      The managers menu of the system looks like this:

MANAGER @DMO                                                    Tir 22-Jun-1993
                      Shared Drawer System Administration

         SEL Select drawer Name: ISO 9000

         SU Select user User: JOHANSEN.HANS PETER
                                             Hans Peter Johansen @DMO

         C    Create user as member
         E    Edit user privileges
         D    Delete user as member
         I Index of members of selected drawer
         IUD  Index of users drawers

         CD   Create new drawer
         DD   Delete drawer and contents
         ID   Index of drawers

         Enter option and press RETURN

      The system has been offered to the danish ALL-IN-1 accounts as part of
      an upgrade package from an old shared file cabinet system, and has been
      quite a sales success this spring.

2881.4How about including it in the product?MIMS::MORABITO_PWed Jun 23 1993 18:005
    Thanks for the ideas. At least this gives the customer something to
    try. It would be nice if this was an asset, although it seems that
    customers these days don't want to pay for anything.
