2851.0. "TeamLinks V2.0, TeamLinks Connection for IOS" by SIOG::T_REDMOND (Thoughts of an Idle Mind) Fri Jun 11 1993 15:35

After discussing the subject with Graham Pye, he and I felt that the
general rule about discussing unreleased products in this conference
should be broken in order to keep people up to date with the latest
news this week. This is to avoid you getting into a situation where
your customer knows more than you do about Digital's future plans.

On June 8 Digital announced TeamLinks V2.0 and the TeamLinks Connection
Package V2.0. Ship date is "expected later on this year", and dates
were given at a non-disclosure meeting held at DECUS in Atlanta.

An early baselevel of TeamLinks V2.0 was demo'd at DECUS and attracted
large amounts of attention, gaining lots of positive comment and
feedback. The demo showed ALL-IN-1 IOS V3.0 acting as both a file
cabinet and messaging server for a TeamLinks client. In other words,
66% of normal ALL-IN-1 activities (FMS and word processing/mail
preparation) was offloaded to a Windows client. The integration was
very smooth, and the latest WordPerfect integration macros (designed
for TeamLinks V1.1 and now in late beta test) were usable with
TeamLinks v2.0, thus proving that the general approach to third party
integration taken in TeamLinks V1 (FILECAB.DLL) works after an upgrade.

Major points shown to customers included:

-- ALL-IN-1 dataset server (AIDA), used for mail validatin against
PROFIL, NETWORK et. al. Actually, an AIDA-specific data set called
ADDRESS$ is used to access ALL-IN-1 sources of address information.

    -- TeamLinks V2.0 features:
       -- Menu customization
-- "Create document" option (just like IOS, you can create non-mail
objects from the Information Manager now)
-- Performance improvements due to the single INFOMAN.EXE (as
opposed to two images in V1), plus more intelligent use of
          resources.
-- Automatic escalation of mail validation thru PAB, server
subscriber list (DEC MAILworks or ALL-IN-1 PROFIL) to DDS
-- New TeamLinks Setup utility (good redesign)

Also discussed was the TCP/IP support for TeamLinks V2 clients to
access ALL-IN-1 resources such as the File Cabinet and AIDA servers.

The reaction was overwhelming -- it was the first DECUS in a long time
where we weren't getting beaten up by customers. They were so happy to
see TeamLinks V2.0 and the IOS connection. All their system management
facilities can operate for TeamLinks clients -- a big plus point for
large sites. The possibilities of building Windows front ends to IOS
applications using the AIDA server for access (and solving problems
like concurrent access to data by VT and PC users along the way) was
also a popular point of discussion. I spent lots of times with
individual customers going over how they can use TeamLinks V2.0 towards
    the end of the year.

Anyway, we (GAP and I) felt that the good news should be spread out as
quickly as possible. We have a winner here! Let's make sure that we
    let everyone know about it.

    Tony

P.S. Get "official" information (like the press release) from your
local Marketing people. If they don't know anything about it I suggest
that you contact Steve Martin @ZKO (Corporate) or Catherine Hayward
    @REO (Europe) for information.

    Hi Tony!

Great news! Thanks for letting us know. Small nit:

>-- Automatic escalation of mail validation thru PAB, server
>subscriber list (DEC MAILworks or ALL-IN-1 PROFIL) to DDS

Actually we'll be picking up NETWORK.DAT, nicknames and groups
in the final version, but this baselevel has a bug and only
    	picks up PROFIL.

    Regards,
    Paul

PS	I have stopped reading this conference for a while due to
schedule pressures but someone pointed me to it.
2851.2And for DIGITAL employees?YR2000::WICKS_AU.S.A 2 England 0 - I was there!Mon Jun 14 1993 07:1212
    Tony,

might we also tell people how to get a baselevel of said product now
that the customers have seen it???

I believe that in addition to what you listed the product also requires
an unnanounced ALL-IN-1 patch kit - correct?

    Regards,

    Andrew.D.wicks (who doesn't have a baselevel)

    Andy,

At the moment you need four Central Engineering developers om site to
install it. And you have to buy them several beers and get us to work
all day Sunday to make it work!

And then to keep it working, you have to stop the people demonstrating
it from changing the connection type to Async....

Other than that it's simple :-)

Rest assured that as soon as it's suitable for wider distribution, it
    will be made available internally.

    Graham

    Andy,

Stop being so picky. GAP and I felt that it was good judgement to
inform the field about software that was being demo'd at DECUS.
Otherwise we put our people at a positive disadvantage. I don't like
    doing this.

Field test baselevels that don't require lots of engineers to install
and maintain (although I must say that the software behaved itself
*most* of the time that I was using it -- fear, or something, coming
into play) will be available later on this summer. Further discussion
on this topic (apart from the great reaction at DECUS) should be
    conducted in the ABBOTT::A1INFO conference.

    GAP,

Thanks for the positive response! sorry to have missed you.
    I don't have 4 engineering developers to hand (and isn't AVB a
manager?) but i'm going to try to install it anyway.

    Tony,

nice to see you back in the notesfile...

2851.6Yes, really four!IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeTue Jun 15 1993 19:237
The count of four engineers included an extremely valuable member of
the TeamLinks development team, who was unfortunately too busy writing
the product to be able to stay all week!

AVB didn't arrive until later on Sunday.

    GAP,

oh ok - oh by the way I now have it running about 30 miles north of
    where you installed it.

I'd just like to clarify, in my own head, the current situation
with regard to Teamlinks and the ALL-IN-1 IOS mailserver.

    1)	With Teamlinks V2.0, the IOS mail server becomes fully operational.
What I mean is with the exception of the Teamroute functionality, I
will be able to use the ALL-IN-1 IOS as my PC mail server and can forget
about the DECmailworks product, if I so choose. From my PC I will be
able to fully utilise the remote IOS file cabinet, and be able to use
all mail functions (reply, forward, etc.)

    2)	The TL X2.0 is in the early stages of field test and not
    particularly robust?

    3)	The A1_ECO001030 patch kit should be installed before attempting to
    install TL X2.0?

I realize that many of these questions may seem trivial to
some but there is such a HUGE amount of information relating to these
products that sometimes the very basic questions are forgotten.

    		Cheers

    		Steve
2851.9Some answersAIMTEC::WICKS_AU.S.A 2 England 0 - I was there!Wed Jul 14 1993 17:5419
    Steve,

    1) yes - it does almost everything you can do from a VT.

    2) no I wouldn't say it was unstable. remember TL v2.0 includes more
bits than just the IOS connection. The DECMAILworks piece is pretty
solid. The IOS bit is still under development but all should be well
for a stable EFT kit in the next few weeks. If you have a customer
then register for the kit now and demo it when the EFT kit is
       announced.

    3) yes and No - you also have to install an unnannounced and not
discussed here yet patch that i'll call the MUP (hope that's ok with
the other moderators) Such a patch will also go to EFT with TL v2.0
       and the IOS connection soon.

    Regards,

    Andrew.D.Wicks

Although i don't think that you will be able to do the Set Mail User
command with v2.0!
