ALL-IN-1 2.4 (patched to K603) VMS 5.5-2 i need to merge 2 DOCDB.DAT and DAF.DAT files for 2 users. i've read the description of OA$CNV_MERGE function...is there anything else that needs to be done? why merge the files you ask... 1. the hardware on systemA went away. 2. had to blend 360+ users from systemA to systemB 3. systemB was an existing system with 2000+ users and ALL-IN-1 2.4 4. the powers that be decided to unshare the mail on systemA and then backup and restore accross the network the accounts. this worked fine for about 98% of the accounts. the 2 that I have a problem with had 2000+ documents in their file cabinets on systemA. after doing the backup etc onto systemB, they had most of their documents, a number of them were header/notext. i was able to restore and re-unshare these 2 account on systemA before the hardware went away. so now i have these 2 accounts on systemB that the users are using AND i have a saveset of the accounts from systemA. this is what i want to do - 1. restore the saveset to [user1.OA]. append _OLD to the docdb and daf from the saveset 2. MERGE the 2 docdb.dat and daf.dat files together does this sound resonable? thanks - ann

Don't use OA$CNV_MERGE (I'm surprised that no-one has said this before). Use the standard OpenVMS CONVERT utility to merge the files together. You may, however, hit duplicate entries in DOCDB.DAT. Hasn't everyone got a document number 000001? Tony

You may, however, hit duplicate entries in DOCDB.DAT. Hasn't everyone got a document number 000001? No. my first one is 002361 Anyway, the primary key is <folder:30><fixer> so the chances of your getting duplicates are much reduced (unless you leave everything in READ :-)) D.

No, the one with 23,000 documents in his READ folder left at Christmas. It only took me four or five hours to delete that folder :-) The remaining IOSG managers are quite well behaved! Graham |
