2797.0. "Sender and Fetcher hang when running concurrently" by OSLACT::BJARNEC_P (The last boat left without me .....) Thu Jun 03 1993 16:18

    Hi,
    
    One of our customers has a problem in that when both the Sender and
    Fetcher run at the same time they both hang.
    
    The S and F start with 5 minutes between them, every 5 minutes, but the
    F has a lot more to do so it is not always finished by the time the S
    wants to start.  Eventually they both start at the same time - and the
    result is a hang.
    
    Could this be caused by the locks being taken out in the file
    OAMTIMAIL.COM (on OA$MTI_DATA:SENDLOCK.DAT and
    OA$MTI_DATA:FETCHLOCK.DAT)?  Anyway, the current workaround is that the
    System Manager stops S and F from within ALL-IN-1, removes the S and F
    jobs from the batch queue, and restart S and F.  Since the hang happens
    randomly, they need to keep an eye on the S and F all the time - which
    means that the situation is pretty inconvenient.
    
    Therefore, does anyone know how they can fix / get a better workaround
    for this?  Is the problem known?
    
    They are running:	ALL-IN-1 v3.0 (-1?)
    			VMS v5.5-2

Hi Bjarne,

(hope the hangover after last night's celebrations isn't too bad!)

Are you sure that the hang is occurring at the lockfile commands? I haven't 
heard of any problems like this before - and I can't see how it can happen 
with the code as it is. Has the customer changed either of the oamti*.com 
files?

    I have just had the details passed to me from the customer and it was
    they that mentioned this file, which could be a red herring, of course. 
    The hang problem, however, is real enough.
    
    Any ideas?

    Is this a concurrent Sender/Fetcher as documented in the Mail
    management guide - if so shouldn't they be running out different
    accounts e.g A1SENDER and A1FETCHER in which case they won't lockeach
    other out.
    
    If they're both running out of POSTMASTER then why not recommend
    the customer go to a concurrent sender/fetcher.
    
    P.S are we allowed to make jokes about Norwegian Blue Parrots in here?

So, I think we need to know from the customer:

1 Are they running both jobs from the ALLIN1/Postmaster account?

2 Is the hang in the DCL or in the ALL-IN-1 image?

As Andy says, their best fix, as they seem to have a high mail throughput, is 
to go to concurrent sender/fetcher.

    I have spoken to the customer, and right enough, they are not running
    the S. and F. in a Concurrent configuration.  I have recomended that
    they implement this as a solution to the problems they have seen.
