2782.0. "A1$ prefix" by VNOAPP::TIMA_204410 (Plus en plus seule...) Tue Jun 01 1993 15:57

Hello !

My customer uses for his ALL-IN-1 disk a logical called
A1$DISK. He runs at the moment ALL-IN-1 2.4 and
wants to upgrade soon. He had a look in the Installation
Guide 6-2 (Preparing your system )where is recommended,
not to use disklogicals with A1$ or OA$ to avoid conflicts
with the ALL-IN-1 System.

Can anyone of you confirm or strengthen this recommendation,
because the customer would have to change all his hundreds
of procedures he wrote until now...

Thanxx a lot

This isn't going to sound very helpful....

Things with "$" in them are always reserved to Digital. Things that
start A1$ are reserved for ALL-IN-1. The ALL-IN-1 installation
procedure uses a large number of global symbols and process logicals
that start A1$, and gets very confused. the reason for the warning in
the documentation and the checks in the installation are that we have
had a number of bugs reported against us that were caused by using disc
names, logicals and symbols that start with "A1$".

It doesn't appear that the installation procedure uses A1$DISK, but if
    it fails, don't call me!!!

    Marianne,

this question was also answered by GAP in note 2063 of the _V24
version of this conference since the recommendation was also in the
v2.4 Install Guide it's just a little stronger this time round.

STARS shows that A1$DEVICE has been the most popular cause of installs
failing due to misuse of logical names and you really should encourage
your customer to move off using such names as there's no guarantee
that a future patch or release of ALL-IN-1 might not start using
A1$DISK as it uses hundreds of other similar names already.

It's better for the customer to learn now than later...

    Regards,
