2742.0. "convert WPL to text before sending the doc. " by SWAM2::THAI_MI () Fri May 21 1993 20:03

    My customer is complaining that the document was not converted into
    text before it was sent when the document was created using WP, then EM
    and S in ALL-IN-1. The document became an attachment to the mail
    message. However this is fine when the document was created using EM
    the S. Is there a fix for this? Please help. Thanks.

    Mimi,

    Can you give us some more info on this?

    	Version of ALL-IN-1, actual steps used to create the
    	attachment and message.

    For Example:

    On a version 3 system, I created a attachement from WP using
    WPSPLUS. Then I changed my editor to EVE and went to EM
    and created a mail message and attached the wpl document.

    The read while in the created folder worked and I sent it
    to myself and read it with no problem.

    mimi,

    you'll see from the excellent reply you received in the MAILbus
    conference from Dave Lennig that this is the way ALL-IN-1 works.

    Regards,

2742.3Email - text conversionSWAM2::THAI_MIMon May 24 1993 22:0015
    Tim,
    This is the steps that the customer did:
    	create a document in WP
    	Goto EM
    	select document
    	select S to sent

    This document become the attachment to the Email. When it was sent to
    CC:mail user. The attachment is still in WPL format. However when to
    created the Email using EM C then send S, the content and the
    attchement were converted to text. Therefore the CC:mail user can read
    it. I am looking to see if 1) this is a known problem, 2) there is a
    fix. The version of ALL-IN-1 is 3.0. I appreciate any suggestion.

    Mimi.

Seeing as this is not a 'problem', and therefore there won't be a 'fix' you'll
be wanting to know what your customer's alternatives are. I can think of two:

Customise ALL-IN-1 so that sending the document from EM does not create an
attachment. If the customer has no programming experience, this may be an
expensive solution. Especially expensive if you want some intelligence in the
programming so it only happens for mail to certain recipients.

Or consider buying the MAILbus Conversion Manager - software which will
convert messages sent into Message Router according to rules defined for each
recipient.If you're interesested, full details of this are in the
TAMDNO::MSG_SOLUTIONS conference.

    It should be remembered however, that there have been re-occurring
    requests to extend the OA$MTI_TRNS functionality to handle cases such
    as this. For example, I made a proposal in the previous incarnation of
    this conference (V24) note 896 that most respondants seemed to like...

    So yes, what he is describing _is_ the way it works, but the customers
    complaint reflects another request to _extend_ the way it works.

    BTW, I seem remember correctly a work-around, something like, instead
    of using Send in EM, do a MH (or something like that) to allow sending
    a DOCUMENT as MAIL (and thus OA$MTI_TRNS to kicks in)?

2742.9For a large fee Andrew will write it ;^)AIMTEC::BUTLER_TWed May 26 1993 14:048
    I think Mr's ASH and WICKS have given you the best answers. I find
    it hard to come up with *workarounds* to something that works as
    designed espically, when I feel this customer may be moving away
    from our favorite product.

    Just back from COMDEX,

2742.10Workround, and suggestion about your suggestionIOSG::SHOVEDave Shove -- REO2-G/M6Thu May 27 1993 19:0214
    Dave's right -

    Do a MH (modify header) in EM - this will "convert" the WP document
    into a mail message. Then Send the result. (Note that it copies the
    original before converting it).

    I remember your suggestion (multiple values for Oa$Mti_Trns). Alas, it
    wasn't done in v3.0 and it possibly may not be done in a possible
    future release (am I allowed negative commitments? :-)) However, if you
    still think it ought to be done, say so _quickly_ to product management
    (Dave Holt @REO), with the usual justification for why it will sell
    $millions of ALL-IN-1 licenses. You never know . . .

    Dave.

    re: the workaround - would there be some simple customization possible
    that would cause EM S to do the "MH S" sequence when needed?

    re: the suggestion - I've forwarded a copy of .-1, 896, and a brief
    intro to Mr. Holt. Here's hoping.

See also topic 2680 in this conference, which is discussing pretty much the
same problem. A helpful person :-) put some useful info in there you can
use to try and explain to customers why it works the way it does.
