2451.0. "How To Restore User To Original State After PAT ?" by HTSC19::SIMONLAU () Tue Mar 23 1993 06:38

    Hi,

A customer running ALL-IN-1 STARTER v2.4 on VMS V5.4-2 did PAT (Prepare
Account Transfer over network) and afterwards wanted to restore the
user to original state. By reading the article in TIMA/STAR with title
"How To Restore User To Original State After PAT", the customer
followed the procedures as suggested, up to the point where the
    document mentioned as:

    >You may implement some modifications on your system which will allow
    >for the user to use the RAD operation to recover his documents in this
    >situation. This requires a change to a script to allow the TRANSFER$AREA
    >to be recognized by the restore procedure, and a record must be added to
    >the archive dataset master file to map this archive area to the directory
    >which the files reside in.
    >
    >First, you may modify the ARCHIVE_RESTORE_USER_DOCUMENTS
    >script, used to perform the RAD operation, through Customization
    >Management and insert the following line:
    >
    >.IF #ARCHIVE_ID:13 EQS "TRANSFER$AREA" THEN GET #ARCHIVE_SET =
    #ARCHIVE_ID:13
    >
    >After the line that reads:
    >
    >GET #ARCHIVE_SET = #ARCHIVE_ID:19
    >
?>NOTE: After completing the above changes, make sure that the status
?>of the modified element is LOCKED and becomes FREE after making the
?>element live. If the element is in the BEING EDITTED status, then
?>the changes have not been completed successfully, and you will see the
?>error 'Archive Set Doesn't Exist for this document' when you attempt
   ?>to restore the archived documents.

The customer did insert and modify the line as it said, but had no idea
at all on what the NOTE meant. His questions are:

     . Element - does it mean the ARCHIVE_RESTORE_USER_DOCUMENTS ?

. What is the "status" ? Is it a VMS or ALL-IN-1 term ? How to check
the current value of the 'status' ? How to change it from, say 'BEING
EDITTED' to 'LOCK' or 'FREE' ?

. What does it mean by 'making the element live' ?

. Anyway, is it a right way the customer should follow to do the
       restore ?

    Your input would be appreciated.

( the author of the article mentioned Mr DAVE ZANIEWSKI is no longer
technically competent to comment on ALL-IN-1 system management items,
      unfortunately. )

    Thanks and regards
    Simon

I've used this method many times and it works well. Its the best way I
have found to restore an account where the PAT has failed leaving thousands
of archived document files in the OA$TRANSFER:[USERNAME.USERNAME] directory.

If a PAT was successful I thought the cancel network transfer option
worked, have you tried this ? This should restore the users account
    back to its original state.

The references to locked and free elements in -.1 are Customization
Management terms. I don't think ALL-IN-1 STARTER has CM, can anyone
else confirm this, so to make the change on your system you would have
to edit the DO script in question and recompile the TXL.

    Hope this helps,

    Bruce

    Simon,

I think you omitted some smiley faces in your comment about our
legendary Dead Products Consultant because other people reading your
base note who can't access STARS might not realise that Dave is in fact
the author of the article you mention - i'm told that he is making a take
over bid for Archiving too (:==:) (:==:)

Like almost all articles in STARS this one is aimed at real ALL-IN-1
which has CM in it - STARTER does not.

Also the SPD for STARTER diallows all customisations - even those
outside CM - but provided the customer realises that this is
completely unsupported you would have to edit

    ARCHIVE_RESTORE_USER_DOCUMENTS in OA$DO_SHARE: and recompile
    the TXL using <OA$TXL_COMPILE.

Other changes would have to be made the script named RESTORE would
have to be created at DCL as would RESTORE_TRANSFER_USER_DOCUMENTS
presumably in your OA$USER directory and basically you have to set aside a
fair bit of time to do all this.

    ALl-IN-1 Starter 2.4

i have a similar situation. while doing a user transfer, i accidently
put the original system (system i'm transferring FROM) as the name of
the system to transfer TO when creating the PAT.

i've done the instructions in the DSN article, recompiled the TXL.

BUT, whenever i try to <DO RESTORE in ALL-IN-1, i get the message

That functionality not available in ALL-IN-1 Starter

So, who does one get around this? i've tried it in /NOINIT also.
the protections on the scripts is W:RE

    	thanks - ann

    Ann,

which functionality isn't available in STARTER? <DO or archiving?
does STARTER have trace if so see what that tells you

P.S how high is the water?

2451.5did i really figure it out?ANGLIN::HARRISAbeep meFri Jul 09 1993 21:519
well, looks like some knowledge is sinking into the ol' brain this
afternoon. it seems that when i created the 2 scripts per the DSN
article they were put into SITE areas.

i copied the scripts to oa$LIB_SHARE and they worked like a charm.

shows ya what you can do with a low stress afternoon (a couple of ESB's
    son't hurt either) :) :)

The message "This functionality not available in STARTER" simply means that
ALL-IN-1 STARTER can't find the script, as you found out. If you put the script
in one of the normally-searched directories, or use the full filename for it,
then all is OK.
