2445.0. "Manual BMA help wanted" by GIDDAY::BURT (Chele Burt - CSC Sydney, DTN 7355693) Mon Mar 22 1993 06:29

Hello and greetings,

A rather large customer (Australian Broadcasting Commission) is currently
running ALL-IN-1 V2.4 (British). They plan to upgrade to V3 in a matter
of weeks. (days?)

The customer has opened up new mail areas, and closed off old mail areas.
He has a number of disks, of which 4 are SHAR*. There are bits of shared area
hither, thither and yon.

The customer almost certainly needs to run BMA. The customer doesn't WANT to
run BMA. He'd like a MANUAL procedure, as the site has literally HUNDREDS of
departments (& BMA works, of course, by department).

This is giving me the horrors.

Help?

Thanks & regards,

Chele

Is that good or bad news ?

I don't see a problem in manually updating the Mail Area
Profile fields for certain (groups) of users.

Hi Jan,

Do you have any hints on just how to go about it? Won't all the user's need
their docdb.dats etc modified if their shared files get shifted about?
THAT'S the bit that's bothering me...

Thanks & regards,

Chele

BMA does not touch old files. All newly created mails will
be stored in the modified Mail Area location(s).

That's why all the logical to all area and all directories are
    needed.

2445.4That's why we use logicalsIOSG::SHOVEDave Shove -- REO2-G/M6Wed Mar 24 1993 17:2212
To amplify what Jan said in .-1:

All references to shared area files are always via the OA$SHARxyyy
logicals - so you can move shared area directories quite happily
provided you make sure that the logicals get updated (by changing the
appropriate entries in the master files in v3.0).

It's for jsut that reason that the file cabinet doesn't store
translated file specs, even though it would perform better if it did
(instead of forcing RMS to translate the logicals at run-time).
