2420.0. "User1 first name = User2 last name?" by GLDOA::HOLBEL () Mon Mar 15 1993 19:31

    I am having a problem with addressing a user in the EM C option
    of ALLIN1 IOS V2.4.

    I believe there are three records involved,

    1. A user "Jan Michael" has a profile on the local VAX.
    2. A user "Michael Klingensmith" who does not have a profile record
       but does have a network.dat address.
    3. A user MKSMITH whose profile record account names (VMS and ALLIN1)
       are MKSMITH. This profile name does contain a surname of
       "Klingensmith" and given name of "Michael".

    When I enter KLINGENSMITH at the "TO:" field and hit enter
    the result is Jan Michael.
    When I enter KLINGENSMITH and enter "GOLD L" I see "Michael
    Klingensmith" but when I choose this option the result is
    Jan Michael.
    If I enter MKSMITH then I get the expected record.

    Can someone explain what is happening?

    Thanks,

    John

2420.2Better in v3.0, I thinkIOSG::SHOVEDave Shove -- REO2-G/M6Fri Mar 19 1993 17:2926
    I take it that the actual usernames (profil.user, rather than their
    full names, profil.fulnam) are those that you gave in .0?

    In that case, I'm not surprised at your results. ALL-IN-1 used to have
    a lot of problems with processing usernames with spaces in them -
    basically it tries to be clever (for example, if you type Fred Shove on
    my system, it will find my username which is just SHOVE). Sometimes it
    tries to be too clever and produces daft results like yours.

    There have been lots of fixes to this code, so you may find it works
    better on v3.0 -- in fact I've just tried it, and when I enter MICHAEL
    I get

    Michael Klingensmith                 ( MICHAEL KLINGENSMITH@A1@HERO )

    (i.e. the NETWORK entry).

    I can only get the profile entry Jan Michael by entering JAN

    Entering KLINGENSMITH at the TO: prompt (followed by either <return> or
    <find> produces the "Press Gold M for paper mail..." error message.

    So it's better, but still may not be exactly what you want.

    from our test system before someone sees them!)
