2285.0. "3rd Party A1 Newsletter" by POBOX::CROWE (I led the pigeons to the flag..) Wed Feb 17 1993 22:34

Are your customers receiving this??
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
The following is an introductory article from a new newsletter I received
called: OA$UPDATE A Newsletter from ECAP Systems Inc. for ALL-IN-1 Managers

It includes articles from ECAP Systems, Griggs & Associates Inc., LeBlanc &
Associates, Ltd., Jenrick Software, and the DECUS AIM SIG. It also contains
some promotions for ECAP's various ALL-IN-1 software add-ons.

They are offering a free subscription. Send Name, company, address, city,
state, zip, country to:
	OA$UPDATE
	ECAP Systems Inc.
719, rue Principale, PO Box 826
	Casselman, Ont CANADA K0A 1M0

Here's the introductory article written by Eric Covington, ECAP Systems
(do notice the 2nd paragraph):

Welcome to the first third-party newsletter witten expressly for the
ALL-IN-1(TM) communitty! OA$UPDATE(TM) is ECAP's answer to your need and
desire for a definitive source of ALL-IN-1 information.

We have observed that, despite its large installed base and user community,
ALL-IN-1 issues did not seem to be getting the attention they deserved.
Frankly, we are not quite sure why this is the case. But it was clear to us
from talking with members of the ALL-IN-1 community, that a wide varitey of
information was badly needed. In usual ECAP fashion, we took it upon ourselves
to find a solution to this. And here is the answer - OA$UPDATE.

I draw your attention to the newletter's masthead because it succinctly states
what OA$UPDATE is about, namely "A Nesletter from ECAP Systems for ALL-IN-1
Managers."

We intend to base the newsletter's content around four main areas:
	- ALL-IN-1 management issues
	- ALL-IN-1 technical information
	- General interest matters
	- ECAP solutions

As you can see from this first issue, it is a principle we are putting into
practice.

Terry Griggs has written a good story on controlling the cos of a key component
of ALL-IN-1; Theresa LeBlanc outlines serious consideration to think about
before migrating to v3.0; Hans Hermus looks at the functionality of A1-Access;
and Patrick LeSesne tells you how to find more information on ALL-IN-1.

However, it is not our intention to preach from on high. We want OA$UPDATE to
be your newsletter as much as it is ours. To that end, we are looking for
story ideas and submissions to the newsletter. If there is an ALL-IN-1 tip,
trick or issue that you think would benefit the community, please give
Cheryl DeLaplante a call at 613-764-3889 to discuss your idea.

This is the first edition of this OS$UPDATE newsletter.

The following comments are MY OPINION. The articles from the other
companies mentioned seem to be factual and are fairly well written.
The 2 articles from ECAP don't sit real well with me. That second
paragraph in the introduction takes on too nasty a tone for my taste.

Another article written by Alan Price of ECAP Systems introduces them
as provideing "a family of solutions for functionality missing from
    ALL-IN-1."

Just thought you might like to know about this.

    Tracy,

Things that make you go "HmmmmmmmmH" - I know Messrs Griggs and Miss
Leblanc well (:==:) the other names sound unfamiliar. Before I comment
anymore i'd like to see the rest of the articles - any chance you
could fax me a copy of it at DTN 343-6631? (that's the CSC's FAX
machine as i'm not important enough to have my own!)

Of course you'll want something in return - how about your next relink
or installation call answered free by me - this is an introductory
offer of course (:==:) subsequent calls will be charged at the normal
rate of one pint of warm beer per undefined symbol etc....!

2285.4Sounds like Marketing hype to justify their newsltrGANTRY::HULLDigital Services Delivery - MotownThu Feb 18 1993 15:3610
The comments about A1 users not getting enough information doesn't hold
water, IMHO. If the customer is on contract they ought to be getting our
ALL-IN-1 Updates during the year, and/or use DSIN. There's 2 excellent
books by Tony, and there's DECUserve with it's superb core of ALL-IN-1
customers who are very talented.

Someone isn't doing the small amount of legwork needed to let the customers
know this and take advantage of it.

2285.5Correct me if I'm wrong, but...SCOTTC::MARSHALLSpitfire Drivers Do It ToplessThu Feb 18 1993 16:058
I haven't seen it, but from the notes here it seems to me this "newsletter"
exists primarily to advertise ECAP's products, and the services of other
companies. Calling it a newsletter will make people read it and take note of
what it says, more than if it were just sent out as another junk-mail shot.
Clever marketing; maybe we should try something like that :-)

Cynical of REO
:-)

I have a copy of the newsletter. I will gladly make copies for anyone who
wants one. You might also want to call ECAP at 613-764-3889, ask for a
copy, and to be put on the mailing list. You might also want to submit
articles to it.

In general, its technically accurate, and it is free advertising for Digital.

Some undercurrents at DECUS mentioned this newsletter. I agree with
Scott -- it is a marketing device to try and shift ECAP consulting
services and add-ons. After listing to Tony Ioele do a review of
Digital office products at DECUS I doubt whether he knows very much
about anything other than ALL-IN-1 and Message Router, and even that
knowledge is skimpy and only surface-deep. Ms. LeBlanc deals with
training matters, and she's good at end-user stuff, but again, I doubt
whether she could manage a technical discussion about anything that
wasn't covered in the ALL-IN-1 and WPS-PLUS documentation set. A
    typical consultant, in fact.

These people are all quite high in the US DECUS organization. It makes
    a difference, maybe.

2285.11A1-Access from ECAPSIOG::T_REDMONDThoughts of an Idle MindMon Feb 22 1993 10:1114
Some more information about ECAP. These people showed a product called
A1-Access at DEXPO in Vegas (December). They positioned A1-Access in
the same bracket as TeamLinks, giving "transparent access to the
ALL-IN-1 File Cabinet". Unhappily their demos tended to corrupt the
file cabinet, much to the amusement of certain onlookers. In fact,
the company is also associated with some of the code that Barclay Brown
"gave" to the worldwide ALL-IN-1 community -- CDMS and ARTS being the
two best examples. These did a wonderful job of corrupting cabinets
    as well.

With such a track record, would you recommend these people to your
    customers? I know my answer.
