2267.0. "OA$FORMATTER Link query" by GIDDAY::BURT (Chele Burt - CSC Sydney, DTN 7355693) Tue Feb 16 1993 05:49

Greetings and Salutations!

A customer has recently(ish) upgraded to ALL-IN-1 V3.0 from ALL-IN-1 V2.4.

Customer having problems with right adjusted tabs.
For example in the document below, the customer finds that if there are no
characters in the 2nd column, the third column will be out of alignment by one
space.

L-------------------------------------------------------->---------->--------->R

                                                   Capital Operating

                                                    Budget Budget

SERVER FOR VAXES AND PCS
Tape drive and media 8000 2000
PC disk backup software 5000

This does NOT happen on our 3.0-1 system.

This problem is one which is on the "fixed" list for the amazing 3.0-1.

2.5.1 WPS-PLUS Document Processing - various formatter problems

The WPS-PLUS formatter presents various problems:
        * Alignment problems with tabulation: if there are multiple
tabs in the text (left and right alligned), the text is
slightly out of position. Also, a wrap caused by a wrap tab
or a W (word-wrap indent) entry in the ruler does not align
          properly.

The customer is less than excited about installing 3.0-1. He has come up with
the idea of linking the OA$FORMATTER.OBJ to obtain a newie.
This does not seem like a terribly wholesome idea to me, (but what would I
know).
If I am right, what nasties will happen?
If the customer is right (it's in the rules ;) ) how does he go about doing the
link?

Thanks & regards,

Chele

Even if relinking the formatter was an option, then it wouldn't fix the
problem for foreground printing, e.g. to PORT printers.

I can't imagine anyone is going to suggest that you let them relink the
formatter, although I suppose they could link in A1LINK and see what
modules are linked into it, and then pull those modules out of the
    patch kit, and then......

    ...... Don't call us :-) :-)

Obviously there might also be all kinds of side effects, since the
contents of V3.0-1, like all other releases, are only tested in their
entirety. Why are they worried about installing all of V3.0-1 anyway?

Hiya Graham,

They don't want to do another install because they didn't enjoy the last one.
(two, three, - I forget how many times they bombed out on their upgrade)
They had a number of problems with things they'd munged & not corrected prior
to v3 - even a FT version of WPS-PLUS VMS floating around. It's a
"user-driven" site, and they don't want to go that way....

I'll let him know that it considered to be an "unsound" proposal.

G'day again,

Customer is determined to be unhappy. If he can't munge OA$FORMATTER, he's
going to consider going back to 2.4. He doesn't want the down-time asscoiated
with an upgrade. His users aren't happy having to add an extra space (wow).
He's not happy 'cos his user keep biting him.
I've suggested that using a udp to bung the extra space in may help de-teeth
his users, but he's determined to be an (not very) animated version of a
Leonard Cohen / Janis Ian compilation album.
