2257.0. " Reservation of shared doc having non WPL format" by GIDDAY::LEH () Mon Feb 15 1993 06:02

IOS 3.0-1 on VMS 5.5-2

A question on creating/editing a document in local shared drawer where
copying of document body file will happen in certain circumtances, which
again depends on document format.

A summarized table:

	===================================================================
				OWNER			SHARER
	===================================================================
		WPS-PLUS	in place		OA$TEMP
	CREATE
		WORDPERFECT	in place ? in place

		WPS-PLUS	in place in place ?
	EDIT
		WORDPERFECT	in place ?		OA$TEMP ?
	===================================================================

where "in place" is the designated location, e.g. [.DOC6] for document number
xxxxx6

The script WP_SYS_EDIT does offer some explanations but I don't always trust
my understanding.

Also, the codes in this script and WP_SYS_CLOSE seemed to indicate deletion of
the temporary file created by the sharer will look into OA$TEMP only; hence,
the copy in "in place" will become untouched.

Could someone offer the truth? and fixes/workarounds ?

Thanks

    This is the table for V3.0-1

    	===================================================================
				OWNER			SHARER
	===================================================================
		WPS-PLUS	in place		replace
	CREATE
		WORDPERFECT	in place in place (* note 4)

		WPS-PLUS	in place		in place
	EDIT
		WORDPERFECT	in place		copy/replace
	===================================================================

    1. Replace means create the file in a document in the folder RECOVERED
    DOCUMENTS and then copy this to the target document.

    2. Copy/replace means copy to a document in the folder RECOVERED
    DOCUMENTS, perform the edit and then copy back to the target document.

    3. In exceptional circumstances these rules will vary, for example if
    someone is reading the WPS-PLUS document that we want to edit then the
    copy/replace method will always be used (otherwise WPS-PLUS would not
    be able to achieve its exclusive lock on the file).

    4. The bad news. There were problems, for external editors, which had not
    been corrected in V3.0-1 . For example the position marked * in the
    table should be copy/replace. A fix will be in a pfr.

    5. OA$TEMP is no longer used, although there is a passing reference to
    it in WP_SYS_CLOSE.SCP . You have got me worried now, I was sure that
    V3.0-1 included the change to discontinue use of OA$TEMP.

    Tell me if you need more details

    Yes, you're spot right on the discontinued use of OA$TEMP in 3.0-1
    according to my test

    Many thanks
