Also posted in dectrace, any feedback welcome This a question about a1perf reports, cust has several concerns which I've listed below. If anybopdy knows the answer, or a better notesfile to ask in I'd welcome the feedback! Thanks, Simon When metering is turned on, and collecting is disabled, users get "dectracing is not enabled" each time they cross a collection point. How to disable this message? o Cust needs to collect 15 minute snippets of info, but A1 only seems to register at login time. How to either run A1RPTS and specify a time interval, or have people logged in continuously. {this is the biggie question} o Cust turns metering to 0 or 4, are there any other values? {its NASA, they're alwaysthis nosey!}

for the second question, does ALL-IN-1 attempt to register with DECtrace ONLY when the user first signs in, or does it do in a continual basis. Otherwise if the user signs in at 9am, and the collection starts at 10am then the user will not be collected. Thanks ! Simon

I don't have a system with DECtrace installed to test this on but I think the answers to your questions are as follows:- ALL-IN-1 will check the value of the logical only when the user first enters ALL-IN-1. The consequence of this is that a user will not be traced if OA$MET_METER_SWITCH is defined after the user has logged in. Moreover if the DECtrace is stopped while a user being traced is still logged in then he will continue to get the annoying error messages you mentioned. There is no way to stop them. DECtrace collects and stores every action it traces so theoretically you should be able to break down the usage for any period you like. The DECtrace conference may help you with this. You can set OA$MET_METER_SWITCH to other values - these are described somewhere in the ALL-IN-1 documentation (system management). The other values alow you to collect the performance indicators by means of ALL-IN-1 metering without the need of DECtrace or RDB. The drawback is that the data produced is not in a readable format and you have to write your own programs to make sense of it as well as devise your own means of archiving. Mark

lucky me, another large ALL-IN-1 customer hit the same three concerns, 1. EPC-W-DISABLED, gets this message when a user has started collecting and then midway through the collection it gets cancelled. Then users get the message at every switchover point 2. OA$MET_METER_SWITCH is examined only when the user enters ALL-IN-1, cust would like it examined more frequently, so users don't have to log out and in to be collected. 3. Could A1PERFs be enhanced to show the average elapsed time for each event, rather than just a total time? I kind of agree with the customer that these are annoying habits and that the two products could work better together. For (1) ACMS when it gets the return status from an EPC$ call should ignore it. Why? Because dectrace is a performance tool that should be in the background and never affect the end user(of which this customer has 3000!). (2) is also a problem, as my customer can't ask all his users to log out and in just to monitor them. What I'm hoping is to hear that ALL-IN-1 has a patch, or will be changed in a future version to accomodate these changes. If not then I'll probably be asked by the customer to escalate the call so we can get these changes in. Any response welcome! Thanks ! Simon |
