Hello, We are preparing to install some 40 odd VAX systems for a customer. There are many other layered products on the systems, but essentially each system will provide the same type of service and will have identical software products. Instead of having to go through the business of installing the many products separately at each site 40 time over we are proposing a Common System Disk approach. This will mean that we will build one system and configure it generically in terms of SYSGEN parameters, DECnet parameters etc. and include an installation command procedure which will be executed the first time the system is booted. That is at each customer site, we just restore the generic backup of the pre-built system and run the command procedure. This command procedure will go through the business of setting up the configuration for the local site by asking questions and processing the answers etc. For the most part this is reasonably straightforward. I would like to know what work is involved with ALL-IN-1 V3.0 for this. When ALL-IN-1 is built on the master system (say node FOOBAR, address 1.1) which files are directly connected with the DECnet and SYSGEN data, so that when we run the installation procedure at each customer site and update the SYSGEN and DECnet parameters which files will need to be changed within ALL-IN-1. Are there any other areas which need to be considered with this type of approach apart from the SCSNODE and SCSSYSTEMID. If you can think of any other potential gotchas using this idea I would very much like to hear from you!!! Thanks in advanace Kieran G Mc Corry

Are all the other discs apart from the system disc the same? If not, then you'd need to update some of our data files. I think you'll find some other notes in this conference describing this sort of strategy. Graham | |||||

If I were you I would speak to the people who produce CORE ALL-IN-1 in the UK / Europe. This is the same approach - one ALL-IN-1 system, and local customisations if you want them. WHo builds it?? No idea, but you could start with Murray Smith @ UCG (The Crescent, Basingstoke) and chase around until you find someone who knows. Cheers, Chris |
