2050.0. "EPM$SRVSHR ?!?!?" by UTROP1::BEHARI_A (Ajay Behari @UTO) Fri Jan 08 1993 11:26

    Sorry, I've spent about more than 1 hour looking for an answer
    to this one - in STARS/ALL-IN-1/VMSNOTES conferences - but in vain.
    If I missed it, point me in the right direction.

    What is SYS$LIBARRY:EPM$SRVSHR ?

    Reason I ask : every ALL-IN-1 user opens it & I've 600 of them on my
                   cluster. The image is not installed & hence the extra
    		   overhead - however small or big it may be - it causes.

    		   it seems it's linked with ALL-IN-1 (V2.4 now, V3.0-1
                   on Monday). If so, why is it not installed ?

    (I can, of course, install & forget about it but then...)

    Thanks a lot for your effort.

    Regards,
    Ajay.

    I'm *sure* this has been discussed before. Unfortunately I can't
    remember what the final story is, so I've asked someone who'll know to
    reply...

    Hallo Ajar,

    Which Databases did you open...

    Took me 5 minutes to find...

    {ALL-IN-1-NOTES} V3.0 Image Activation...Differences?

        ATTENDEE_OVERFLOW.DAT, UQM and SITEUQM and some accesses that no
        longer take place such as EPM$SRVSHR.EXE, SITECM, CM

        For ALL-IN-1 V3.0 things are as Kevin said in .1. It must be on the
        system, not necessarily installed. It is referenced in the link,
        but never used during run time.

        Yes, it's to do with performacne monitoring (DECWatch).

2050.3Yes, but...UTROP1::BEHARI_AAjay Behari @UTOFri Jan 08 1993 13:0513
    Jan,

    >Which Databases did you open...

    Yes, I had seen all those entries but didn't find the answer to my
    question -> why is the image not installed if it's used by every
    ALL-IN-1/user ?

    >Happy upgrading this weekend,

    Thanks, I'll definitely let you know how it goes.

    Ajay.
2050.4Not needed, just linked in.CHRLIE::HUSTONFri Jan 08 1993 13:2412

    Ajay,

    It is not installed because it is not used. It is linked in simply as
    an oversight, the FCS use to use EPM for performance monitoring. We
    no longer do. The link to it was left in as an oversight during a
    hectic time.

    If you want, feel free to install it.

2050.5Never usedIOSG::DAVISMark DavisFri Jan 08 1993 13:3018

       EPM was going to be used in ALL-IN-1 performance monitoring but was
       never actualy implemented.

       So far as V2.4 is concerned you can rename EPM$SRVSHR.EXE so that the
       users never open it. ALL-IN-1 will work but there are risks such as
       other applications using it and I am not sure whether it's needed for
       the link. A safer course of action is to install it shared so that at
       least you save on memory used for buffer space.

       EPM is not referenced at all in V3.0 main image. However it is
       referenced by the File Cabinet Server and when I renamed it on a test
       system the FC server failed to start. However it seems to only open it
       once so you don't lose much by having it there.

2050.6ok, satisfied.UTROP1::BEHARI_AAjay Behari @UTOFri Jan 08 1993 14:528
    .4 & .5 are reasonable answers.

    I hope the link to the EPM$SRVSHR will be removed from ALL-IN-1,
    sometime in a future release/patch/whatever.

    Thank you all.

    Ajay.
2050.7nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more...IOSG::STANDAGEOink...Oink...MoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooFri Jan 08 1993 15:1110

    Ajay,

    Yes, let's say it has most certainly been considered for removal in a
    future ALL-IN-1 release/patch !  :-)

    Kevin.
