1992.0. "Documents all disappeared" by BELFST::65212::dean () Fri Dec 18 1992 16:12

A customer has just reported a very unusual and worrying problem.

One of their users experienced problems on logging into her ALL-IN-1 account
last Monday. All of her documents had disappeared. On investigation the system
manager discovered that all of the files were gone too and that

PROFILE.DAT
DOCDB.DAT
DAF.DAT

were there but had a creation date the same as when the housekeeping had last
run. They have metering turned on, but it didn't show anything.

Some background info:-

1. The system was upgraded from ALL-IN-1 v2.4-1 to v3.0 on the weekend of 5th
   December.

2. Everything appeared fine

3. Backups were taken as usual each evening

4. The next weekend (12th December) their housekeeping procedures ran as normal
   i.e.

	- Empty waste & reorg. file cab - 8pm Saturday
	- Reorg system files			 -  10pm    Saturday
	- Reorganise Shared Directories          -  10.30pm Saturday
	- Reorganise Profile & Network data	 -  11pm    Saturday

5. On the Monday the user encountered the problem where all her documents were
   missing

6. The system manager restored the users account from the friday night backup
   and all the documents were there

7. The system manager cannot find anything which would account for what
   happened

One of the most worrying things is that this user is secretary to the Chief
Executive of this organisation and her problems there get a high profile.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Regards,     Jacqueline

1992.2No errors!BELFST::65212::deanMon Dec 21 1992 12:008
The log files just had the regular messag4es about emptying waste,
reorganising the file cab.s etc. And the messages about that users account
were just the same as for all of the other accounts.

There were absolutely no error messages or warnings.

1992.3Any ideas on how to proceedBELFST::DEANJacqueline DeanWed Dec 23 1992 09:226
I'm panicking, this problem (and the fact that we can't provide any explanation)
is getting high visibilty with the customer organisation.

Any ideas on what has happened?

Hi Jacqueline,

The problem is that after you upgraded from V2.4 to V3, and ran the usual
weekend HK procedures, ONE USER couldn't see any documents? But this was
recovered when the user's 'account' was restored from backup?

Was it just one user?

What was the initial error - when the user entered ALL-IN-1 and 'couldn't
see any documents'? What was the error message?

When the restoration was done, what was restored? The whole account? Just
DOCDB.DAT?

Obviously, something abnormal has happened, so getting as much of the
'trivial' information as possible is important.

1992.5The triviaBELFST::DEANJacqueline DeanWed Dec 23 1992 17:3817
Hi Graham,

Thanks for replying.

It was just one users account. When the user logged in I dn't believe
 they got any error messages (they're off now for XMAS). As far as I know,
 when the user tried doing a select she couldn't find the requested document
 then when she did an index there were no documents.

When [.DOC0] to [.DOC9] were checked by the system manager all the WPL files
were gone. Only DOCB.DAT, PROFILE.DAT, ACTITEM.DAT and DAF.DAT remained
and theses all had the date of the housekeeping procedure run.

When the account was restored from backup I believe that the entire account
was restored, all the files docdb etc. etc.
