1964.0. "No XADN option on the Index menu to archive seleted docs" by GIDDAY::SETHI (Man from Downunder) Tue Dec 15 1992 03:54

    G'day All,

A customer has ALL-IN-1 Version 2.4 installed and want's to customize
the Index Menu to include the Archive Documents Now XADN. All the
other options exist on the index menu ie XADL,XCLA and XRAD, the
customer is wondering why the XADN was not included.

I also looked at Version 3.0 and it's not included there ether, there
could be two reasons. 1 - it is not possible to do a XADN and the
other engineering did not have time to include it.

Any feedback would be appriciated thanks

1964.1XADN Clobbers performance!HERO::MORPH::BenoySmoke me a kipper I'll be back for breakfastThu Dec 17 1992 17:4224
RE .0-.2

Being the responsible developer at the time :-) The reasons for there not
being an XADN are as follows:-

Because ADN takes so long and uses up alot of resources, a multiple ADN
would only make system performance worse. This was certainly true for
V2.3/V2.4. This is why you have the ADL/XADL options to mark documents for
later archive by the housekeeping procedure. This is to stop the system
falling on its Knees when you get multiple users doing lots of multiple
archives at the same time. An XADN option would be like emptying your
wastebasket only worse!

Apart from that it is not difficult to implement, the reason it was not
done was we didn't want to clobber performance. As a piece of history, when
the original archive was first developed there was an XADN type option, but
since performance was so bad it was taken out. Which is why it never made
it into any released version of ALL-IN-1.

Does that answer your question?
