| Did someone put it there? Why would there be a .DAT file in either
place?

| SIL is related to the dreaded DECTEXT DSAB
Just take a look at A1LINK.COM.

(That's a name I haven't seen for a very long time.)
A1LINK.COM uses SIL.OLB, but what about SIL.DAT? Judging by the date,
it's definitely been replaced for V3.0. A1V30START.COM defines the
logical DTX$SIL to be OA$LIB, so I just thought maybe it got created in
SITE by accident (first dir in list and all that).

| I shoudn't worry about SIL.DAT. I certainly never have!
It's an old DECtext file. I don't know of anyone who is still using
the DECtext editor or dataset, but then again, there's always someone.
When GAP is back on Monday he should be able to give you the definitive
answer.

| I'm flattered by Tony's (misplaced :-) ) confidence in my ability to be
definitive about this.
It doesn't seem to be in the V3.0 base or English kit, nor is it
mentioned in the installation code anywhere that I can find. Hence, I'm
intrigued by .4's observation that it was replaced in V3.0....
I'd agree with all the earlier repliers, in that it's something to do
with the DECtext DSAB which is (was??) used for the WPS-PLUS
hyphenation routines.
What language kit is this? Perhaps some other layered product brought
it in?

To be more precise, let me quote mr Goguen.
"The file SIL.DAT will be created if necessary
and/or accessed during operations on the hyphenation exception
dictionary. It contains the exception words that the user has
added. "

I read the notes in the WPS-PLUS-V3 conference. Thanks for clearing up
the mystery!
