1773.0. "ALL-IN-1 V3.0 in a ROOTED DIRECTORY???" by ZUR01::TOLBA () Thu Nov 12 1992 17:44

Hello,

A customer wants to install ALL-IN-1 V3.0 as coexistent system in a rooted
directory.

He wants the directory to look like:

$1$DUS15:[PRODUCTS.] [ALLIN1]

He says that in ALL-IN-1 V2.4 it was not possible using rooted directory
due to fact how system services were used.

Did this change for Version 3.0? He will using VMS 5.5-2.

If it is possible to install V3.0 in a rooted directory BUT NOT RECOMMENDED -
I would be most grateful if you could give me some statements why not.

This customer has a very good VMS and also ALL-IN-1 knowhow so he cannot
be easiley convinced something NOT TO DO.

Any help is most welcome!

Best regards,
Manuela

1773.1Not supported because it doesn't workIOSG::TALLETTGimmee an Alpha colour notebook...Mon Nov 16 1992 20:1925

    	It is not supported to install ALL-IN-1 in a rooted directory
    	because it is known that some things do not work. I know for a
    	fact that Transfer User doesn't work if your ALL-IN-1 system
    	is installed on a rooted logical because it uses rooted logicals
    	itself, and as I'm sure you know, you can't have rooted rooted's.
    	ALL-IN-1 would try to create the logical

    	$1$DUS15:[PRODUCTS.][ALLIN1.TRANSFER_OUTGOING.]

    	which wouldn't work.

    	Other subsystems (not just transfer user) also do not work.

    	On the other hand, most of ALL-IN-1 does work, so if you are
    	prepared to put up with redefining logicals when things break
    	(although diagnosis will probably take a while) then you could
    	probably try it. We had a system running like that for quite
    	a while before anyone noticed.

    	But its not supported, not recommended, and definitely doesn't
    	work all the time.
