Quick query with shared drawers. If I create a drawer calling it FRED and do a read on it, the DRAWER is called FRED, and the DRAWER NAME is called FRED. If I then decide to UDR the drawer info to DRAWER NAME JOE and modify the description, the DRAWER has changed to JOE but the DRAWER NAME stays as FRED. Similiarly, if I then share my drawer with someone and they do an IAD, the DRAWER column actually picks up the DRAWER NAME field, rather than the renamed DRAWER field. I understand that user's can share drawers and personalize the drawer names so they are more meaningful, but this is very confusing to users. In my current item block, it tells me that the DRAWER name is JOE with my modified description - yet the IAD still shows the DRAWER NAME field rather than the modified DRAWER field. It does pick up the modified description though. As far as I am concerned, my drawer is now called JOE but the other user can only reference it with FRED. I've looked at the named data behind the IAD form but it doesn't look like a simple change of field name. Thanks for any comments? Julia UK CSC

Julia, Sorry, but this will be a brief reply! UDR only allows you to change your own drawer details, and they will be UNIQUE to you. In other words, the drawer name held in the partition file will remain as the original name (hence why IAD shows this up). The main reason for it working like this is the scenario where you have drawers shared with other users, If you decided to personally Update the drawer with a new name (for your use, like a nickname really), then it would result in ALL other sharees having to re-add the drawer to their filecabinet, as the information in the partition has changed. Is this an OK rushed answer ?/ :-) Kevin. | |||||

THere are really two names for each drawer, the real name of the drawer which is unique throughout the network, and the name that you all the drawer by. Each user who has access to the drawer has to have the real name be the same, this is how the FCS finds the drawer. This name cannot be changed, ever. THe other name, as Kevin mentioned is sort of a nickname that you have for the drawer. It can change since it is stored on a per-user basis in your filecab.dat file, as opposed to the unique name which is stored in a partition wide file called partition.dat. --Bob |
