1748.0. "Paper Mail Problems in V3.0" by KERNEL::SMITHERSJ (Living on the culinary edge....) Tue Nov 10 1992 14:59

It looks like Paper Mail doesn't like being printed on DQS printers
either. I guess maybe these are treated like a logical as they point
to a printer on another system?

If I change the printer field in profile to a ordinary print queue,
it works OK, it's just when printing to a server DQS queue.

Could someone confirm/deny whether this is the known problem in V3.0. If
not, can anyone think of a workaround at all?

    Many thanks

1748.1DQS queues are now 'Server' queuesIOSG::NEWLANDRichard Newland, IOSG, REO1-D/4ATue Nov 10 1992 19:4117
There are four types of VMS queues - Printer, Terminal, Batch and Server.
ALL-IN-1 queue management regards Printer and Terminal queues as the same,
and refers to them as Print queues.

DQS queues used to have a VMS queue type of 'Printer' but it appears that a
new version of DQS is now setting the VMS queue type to 'Server'.

The Paper Mail code checks that a queue has a VMS queue type of 'Printer'
or 'Terminal', which is why DQS queues used to be allowed but don't work
with the new version of DQS.

I can't think of a work around. Logical names won't help because the queue
management system services will translate them to get the real queue name
before getting queue information.

    Hello:

I just got a call from a specialist on-site wondering if there
is a patch available for this "server queues."

Also, is this considered a restriction for v3.0? I cound find
nothing where this had been reported, suggested, etc..

    Thanks,

    Tim

Well, far be it from me to spoil anyones fun (Andy?), but these cases
have been answered. The answer hasn't been checked and QA'd yet though,
so it shouldn NOT be released as "the answer" to customers just yet.

You should be able to check the idea though.

Thank you for your SPR concerning Paper Mail and DQS based print
    queues.

As you have stated, DQS print queues appear as Server queues and as
such are not accepted for purposes of Paper Mail. We have examined your
problem and have concluded that it is a restriction of ALL-IN-1 V3.0
and V3.0-1 which has been triggered by changes in the queue management
    software.

We will assess this problem for possible inclusion in any future
release of ALL-IN-1 but until that time we would recommend that you try
    the following workaround:

Create a Generic queue using the DCL command:

      $ INITIALIZE/QUEUE/GENERIC=(dqs-queue-name) generic-queue-name

This should create a generic printer queue which will re-direct jobs to
the underlying DQS queue. This should prove sufficient to circumvent
    your immediate problems.

Thank you for your interest in ALL-IN-1.

What's more... I bet if you looked on your system, someone in EIS would
have already set things up this way!

    Paul,

I'm not sure what my "fun" has to do with it but if by answering any or
all open SPRs you spoil it feel free.

Alas, without access to my beloved TIME system i am forced to go on the
information listed in STARS which is what was originally in .3.
