1672.0. "INBOX notification" by NCBOOT::HARRIS (oooppps) Tue Oct 27 1992 20:46

    hi,

    ALl-IN-1 2.4, no patches
    VMS 5.3-1
    MR 3.1b

Message was sent from PROFS to 10 ALL-IN-1 users on the same system.
1 out of the 10 says that he did not "see" the message in his INBOX
til late morning. Other users had the message in their INBOX first
thing in the morning. Doing a SH on the message (in the 1 users
    account) showed a rec'd date/time of 21-Oct-1992 04:28am. This rec'd
date/time is the same for the same message in the other recipeients
    accounts.

when RSF ran on Oct 11, PENDING.DAT was converted with no errors.

has anyone else seen this, or is this jsut "user error".

    Ann,

Same system as all your other notes? (:==:)

I assume they and you know that the message doesn't appear in your
INBOX until you do a CABINET GET_PENDING?

    regards,

    Andrew -

this system is teh "system from h***". On this system, users are
complaining that some get a new mail notification hours before others
on the same system for the same message!

could corrupt pennding.dat records be a culprit?

    Hi Ann,

    Process of elimination

    1. Have they customised the system especially the EM sub-system ?

    2. Have you checked the logfiles for Message router in the directories
for <disk>:[MB$] to see if there are any errors in the logfiles in
       the various sub-directories.

    3. Did the fetcher show any error in the logfile ?

    4. Are they sending mail from PROFS via MRP (gateway for PROFS) or
       X400 mail ?

    5. Have you done an $ analyze/rms/check oa$data:pending.dat and did it
show up any error ? By the way the bad news is that analyze does
not always show up all the errors.

    Re your previous note .2

    >this system is teh "system from h***". On this system, users are
    >complaining that some get a new mail notification hours before
    >others on the same system for the same message!

It's that bad now :-). Is this mail coming from the PROFS system or
from the same node ie ALL-IN-1 IOS mail ? If it's happening for
ALL-IN-1 IOS mail and PROFS it may have been caused by customisations or a
    problem with PENDING.DAT.

These are just some ideas and places to look for possible problems you
will have to investigate this. Let us know what you have found.

Ann "oooppps" Harris I must go now have fun
