1615.0. "EM-User at remote node" by SWETSC::SANDSTROM (Elisabeth Sandstrm) Thu Oct 15 1992 17:27

A customer of mine gets the message "User at remote node" when she sends a
message to a user with name "Larsson" if there is a remote user with name
    "Larsson_A" on the same cluster.

Is there something you can do in the NETWORK.DAT file to fix this?

The customer is running V2.4 of ALL-IN-1.

Best Regards and thanks in advance, Elisabeth, Office team, Stockholm

    Elisabeth,

Is this the same as note 1613? I certainly don't recognise the message
could you tell us how to reproduce it?

    Hello again!

No it's not the same as in note 1613. This error message
occur when you send an electronic message and write
the full name in the addressee field for a remote user.
It also happens if you search for a remote user and if
the name is "Larsson_A" and you only writes "Lars" and press
return. Then you get for example 2 name "Larsson" and
"Larsson_A" when you select "Larsson_A" who is the remote
user you can see (user at remote node) to the right of
    the name?

My customer has also had problems when selecting a name
and the message is sent to another person with similar
name. (Example send message to a user with name
"Larsson_A" at another node and the message is sent to
    "Larsson_AA" at the local node?)

    Many thanks for your help

1615.3Don't use underscoresFORTY2::ASHGrahame Ash @REOFri Oct 16 1992 11:3911
Hi Elisabeth,

The '_' character is a special character in address validation - it switches
on the 'deliver to alternative MTS' code. Essentially ALL-IN-1 can consider
Larsson and Larsson_A to be th same profile entry for the address validation.

If at all possible you should change your usernames so they don't contain '_'.

If you can't do that er, someone else will come up with an answer!

1615.4Nothing wrong with underscoresSCOTTC::MARSHALLThe man with the plan...Fri Oct 16 1992 12:2228
Hi,

Grahame is right that addresses with underscores can behave oddly. However, an
underscore does not in itself activate AMTS: that happens only if there
is an unrecognised value in the MAIDES field.

There is nothing wrong with having underscores in usernames (at least not from
a mail addressing point of view). The link between underscores and AMTS is
as follows:

Suppose I have an ALL-IN-1 user TELEX, with a MAIDES of TELEX, to invoke a telex
AMTS system. On form EMHEAD, I can enter TELEX as an addressee, and it is
accepted, as there is a profile record for "user" TELEX.

I can also enter TELEX_123456 as an addressee. First, ALL-IN-1 looks for a user
called "TELEX_123456". When it can't find one, it looks for a user "TELEX",
which is finds and so allows the address. This is to enable the telex number
(in this case 123456) to be supplied in a simple way.

However, ALL-IN-1 will only allow this if TELEX is an AMTS addressee. If user
TELEX is an ordinary ALL-IN-1 user, then TELEX_123456 is not accepted.

So, the point of saying all that is that if you have two ALL-IN-1 users
called LARSSON and LARSSON_A, both with ordinary profile entries, then ALL-IN-1
considers them totally distinct mail addresses. I don't think Grahame's
suggestion in .3 is the cause of your problem.

1615.5ok i'll try some examplesAIMTEC::WICKS_ABraves Win, Braves Win, Braves Win!Fri Oct 16 1992 16:1330
    Elisabeth,

Underscores in user names are generally ok i think the form of
Newcastle recently has caused him to get too excited (:==:)

You seem to be describing three different symptoms and i'm not sure I
understand them yet so let's try and make some assumptions.

    1) you type a full name for a person e.g Elisabeth Sandstrom and then
you press what RETURN or TAB?? It finds a Sandstrom out of
presumably the Network Profile and then puts out an address of
       remote addressee (sandstrom @ a1 @ swetsc)
is this what you are seeing ?

    2) when you type LARS plus RETURN you get a form that says
       LARSSON ( something )
       LARSSON_A ( something )
you select LARSSON_A but LARSSON is put on the header
is this what you are seeing?

    3) On your mail header you have sent a message to LARSSON_A@A1@NODE
but the mail gets delivered to LARSSON_AA@A1@NODE.
Do both LARSSON_A and LARSSON_AA exist on that remote node?

Oh and version of ALL-IN-1 and patches please.

    Regards,

OK! your no 2 is the most exact problem. Once more this occur
when sending to a remote user by searching for the full
name (for example press LARS searching for all LARSSON...
on the system). When the list is on your screen - you
select a remote user Larsson_A and there is also a person
at your local node called Larsson.
At the header it says LARSSON_A (user at remote node) and
after sending the mail it goes to the local LARSSON?
The customer also have another cluster with DDS and when you
search there you always get the node name instead of "User
at remote node" - I don't know what the difference is?

The customer has V2.4 of ALL-IN-1 and 5.5 of VMS!

    Many thanks for your help,
    Elisabeth

    Elisabeth,

Sorry but I can't reproduce either of those problems!

Anyone else want to have a go?
